Future collectability of modern subs

Hi all

I was just looking at an article about vintage subs and how minor differences can make a big difference to value.

It got me thinking about the future collectability of modern subs and what might make a certain sub more collect able in the future.

We all know that modern subs are produced in far larger numbers and that LVs are produced in lower numbers than LNs, but I wonder if some manufacturing "quirks" will make some more collectable in years to come.

Things like the different in the "1000 = 300m" font on some LNs which doesn't seem to be that common, the change to a polished inner clasp.

What do people think??

The last "modern" sub that has value increase potential for the coming years, or for the next 10-15, based on recent changes to the Sub, hands, dial, lugs, ceramic etc., is the 14060, specifically the ones that are 2 liners, with the clean look. The 4 liners as well, but IMO, those Subs, that ref., due to its modern feel but vintage aesthetic will be the Sub that will go up in price, in increments as the years go on.

buy them to wear , and you wont be disappointed ,,, too many about to be any sort of investment.
in my view the cut off point was sapphire crystal.

and this is from a man who could have bought two 5517s for 32 pounds sterling each.

I don't think modern (Maxi Case) Submariners will be collectable in the future. A bit like Chris Bangle BMW's.

I would think none would be collectible given the volumes produced, but, then again, it still amazes me how much certain Rolex from the '80s are going for.

That there are far too many to be "collectible".

I collect what I want to wear.

I am sure at some point all my modern sub-c watches will be collectible. But probably not in my lifetime and maybe not in my daughter's lifetime. But yes one day. If I keep all the box an papers.

There's only one solution. Buy two of everything. Wear one and keep the other in a safe until you're so old you can't remember why you bought them. Yes, I'm joking. Yes, this is sarcasm.

I think only the 'specials' like the Panama Canal commemorative, the RN Ckearance Diver DSSD, the Somazzatori, etc. You just don't have as many nuances in manufacturing as you used to and the production numbers are much higher.

Can't see any modern Rolex sub without factory diamonds being collectible

Well I don't know about the modern maxi case subs, but I do agree with your comment on Chris Bangle's BMW designs.

Buy them to wear and enjoy them. They'll appreciate to a degree or will at least keep their value (as would any Patek and a few other high-end names); however, investment-wise, unless you're a professional dealer in vintage sports-model Rolexes, you're unlikely to get rich just by hanging on to one or two for 30 or more years!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the OP is implying that he (assuming roadhogg is a he) will only buy and/or enjoy a watch if it is in fact "collectable".

It's an interesting topic and conversation even if answer is, "No, modern subs will not be collectable".

All of these, "just buy to wear and enjoy" remarks are of course good intentioned and good advice, but kind of off track.

Cracks me up all of the people definitively saying"no"....how the hell do you know?
I'm sure in the 80's people never imagined that the old plastic crystal watches would become more valuable than the new improved sapphire.
Oh yeah, and how about the 1990's air cooled Porsches that are already selling for more than they did new....
