Vintage Rolex's
I had said I'd put up some photos of the Rolex I have that I believe are Vintage from my last Husbands collection. I bet he would have just loved this forum.
So this is a photo of each then one of all. Any input/information is welcome :) All are authentic just not sure anything else about them. I want to learn about them before I decide their fate. There are three missing besides the GMT Master in my other thread, a Blue/Gold 18k Oyster that I have sent on to his best friend, a black no date Sub (M Model) and a Quartz blue face with 18k gold. (17013) Photos did not show up, I will try again. (See next post for photos, probably only Rolex thread here with Rolex on a lace Granny doily!) As with the other Tiffany dial thread, I believe all of these dials are also either a combination of being aftermarket / refinished / or redone...
There is still value with the watches... I would recommend to take the watches to Tom to have him document the serial and model numbers of each. This will give you an idea on the year of production and model. Good luck! |

Ok so I have a question, it makes sense over the years with older watches some parts have to be redone, refinished or replaced.
So does this kind of equate with say our old Crosley in the garage and say I put an aftermarket set of hub caps on it, that are not time period correct? It devalues it but if you can find the time period correct hub caps it is back to having more value. Trying to understand the word 'vintage' does it include watches either refinished, replaced or redone or is it simply for an all original watch, or as with other collectibles do you have your purists, your semi purists and then your as long as it looks vintage I just don't care? :) I am asking to understand because quite frankly for the purist crowd I can see where it would really get 'fun' as in restoring cars is very fun, but it is a passion. A person simply wanting a vintage looking watch may or may not care? Trying to understand so I know if these are vintage or just Frankenwatches :D I will for sure have Tom give me at least the numbers from all areas of the watch, movements and all that so I can suss out the guys with replacements and know what I have. I don't think the Speed king is that way, but I could be wrong there too (looks like an Original dial to me but am I wrong on that one as well?) Learning, learning, just asking questions to learn not to question all of your wonderful knowledge (I research because I am a bit of a nut, even if I know the answers I do like to cross every T and dot ever I, it is not a matter of not believing ) ps: In the safe I have an extra face for the Presidential, wonder if that its actual real dial, sorry I call it a face! Bad. |

My eyesight is not the best and the picture of the Speedking is also not the greatest.
I do not think Rolex made a yellow "Oyster-Speedking" (hyphenated) dial. Can you read the "Swiss" at the bottom or is it partially covered. Details, details.. Yes, dials get replaced along the way but unfortunately, a watch that is all original is of -obviously - much greater value than one with "generic" parts or later replacement /service parts. Value is not the same. It also depends on the models, the older the more expensive. Before doing anything, as you said you would, get the reference numbers on the watches (models and serials) and then research their market value. Great to hear you may have the original dial for the Prez. I would not even get it mounted, I would sell as is with the additional dial. It appears this watch will need a new crystal and most likely "all" need a service. I would not spend one cent on them if you are not planning on keeping any. Why go out and spend $200-500 on dials, + service if you decide - and if not servicing - paying to have the dials installed (also matching hands if needed). |
