Desirability of TT DJ 16233?

This was my first Rolex which I bought new from an AD in 1989. This model was the shiz in the financial world for those who couldn't swing a gold DD. My champagne stick dial was switched for a silver stick dial at its first RSC service some years later which made it easier to read for me, and, IMO, more attractive. I subsequently bought a new SS Sub Date in 2000 (while the DJ was being serviced) and a SS GMT II Pepsi a few years later.

I see the sport watches going up in value but the old TT DJs seem to be flat and have been for some years. Are they simply no longer a desirable Rolex because of the TT, size, hollow link Jubilee bracelet? I still enjoy mine a lot and wear it in regular rotation. I've heard some people say it's an old man's watch style but I was 38 when I bought mine and had wanted one for a good 10 years prior. I'm 65 now so it is indeed an "old man's" watch today.

I think there's still a lot of love but there are just so many of them. You could argue that there's a lot of Submariners lying around as well but the Submariner (which was considered large at 40mm) is now the norm. The 36mm Datejust is regarded by many as small by today's standards. I think these factors coupled with the new bracelets, cases, etc have made the older Datejusts not hold their value as well. I personally like two tone, but there are many who aren't huge fans.

I am looking to purchase a stainless steel Datejust II as my next watch unless something interesting is released at Basel this year.

The prices have moved up a bit. 5 years ago I was buying 16013's for $1500-$1700 and today they seem to be fetching $2000-$2600. It's a great watch!

IDK, you can't teach class and many younger people wouldn't know a good watch if it kick them, well you know, I'm 49 and love my TT DJ

They don't have a lot of resale value for some reason. The ss seems to be worth more than the tt!
I have one also and I keep it, great watch but I never wear it. Mine has the black face.
It is funny as they are still good sellers brand new.

I love both my 36 and 41 mm DJs. My 36mm is a 16013 however.

After I posted this topic I went over to chrono24 and entered 16233 into their search. Seems like the prices have moved up from what they were a few years ago with examples in the $3-4k range. Not that it matters, mine is not for sale but I was shocked how much my 2000 era SS Sub and 2003-4 era SS GMT II have gone up from what I paid when I bought each new whereas the DJ seemed to be about what I'd paid for it almost 30 years ago.

CG, we are in simpatico on this. I have the same TT DJ w/ white tapestry face as HogWld.
I purchased it in 1988, I still have the box and price sticker of $ 3,250.00, I think I paid $ 2700.00 at Littmans Jewelers, I can almost recall my saleswomans face.
Prior to that I bought a Sea Dweller BNIB for $ 580.00 in 1982. I stupidly traded in that banged up Sea Dweller that I wore as a young construction worker in 1988 for a BNIB Submariner even trade, it hurts to write this.
My subs new value at the time was around 1200-1400 at a dealer, at the time I thought I robbed him blind.
Now like you, I have a mint TT DJ that is worth what I paid for it, that in itself is a feat for a watch I think. But....my sub is worth almost 10 times over. Go figure.
P.S. I'm 55
