Ive seen 2 watches, different sellers, both reputable companies:

the 1978 has all papers, 100% original and last 3 rolex services at 3 year intervals, last one was 2015 they want £3,100-00 for it.

the other is a 2004, with box and papers but no service history
same watch all except this one has a silver tapestry dial £2,600-00

Am i missing something, are the older ones in good order more valuable than the later ones or is it like a vintage car, buy on condition?

Help please, I'm close to doing the deal.

$4400 for a 1978 Datejust, complete set, seems rather steep. Photos of the watch and box set would help determine a price.

so is there a reason what a 78 would be priced more than a 2004?

Not really.

the seller is asking a very high premium for "provenance". On a regular DJ it is not likely worth it..

It's hard to say anything without pics, but from what you've told us, I'd go for 2004. No doubt in my mind. '78 going through so many services might not be such a good thing, they might have butchered the case etc... Like I said, hard to tell without pics.

First off, it is not a complete set. I don't see a warranty paper, hang tags, booklets etc. The box was first used around 1993/94, and was never used during the 1970s. It is not even close to a complete set, let alone a correct set or a set at all.

I'd keep looking and pass on this one.
