Advice needed 1680 red sub

Hi Friends,
Please can someone tell me more about this 1680 red sub? I could bought this one, but I'm not sure about the red print. It looks like a mark V dial, but not sure! Hope for some help here.

Thanks, malverne

Mark V, excellent example, delightful patine lugs appear good, crown guards look stubby, but it wouldn't deter me unless the price was ludicrous

Thanx. Yes the case is in good condition, and I love the dark markers as well.
If Imcompare the color of the red writing, I thought other mark v writings have a more darker red color. What do you think about the color? For me, it looks like red over white...

I think/believe earlier dials look more red over white, this doesn't to me, but whatta I know, it's only one picture.

Looks like a very nice MK V. I don't know if it's on the crystal or dial but there might be a scratch of some sort directly over the 6 o'clock marker.

On a MK V dial, "SUBMARINER" should be printed in red only, not red over white. Here is mine for comparison.

The patina is amazing. Matches so evenly - dial/hands/pearl

Rolex stopped marking the inside case backs sometime in late 1972....

If your watch is c 1973, then your case back is likely original to the watch.

Wear it in good health!

I don't believe it's a mark 4. One of the easiest ways to rule out the mark 4 is to look at the = sign placement over the C in chronometer. To me it looks like a mark 5

Easiest way for me to tell between a MK IV and V dial is the "R" in ROLEX. The slanted leg placement is much different.

Mark V = 'c' of word 'certified' is directly below 'h' in 'chronometer' and the bottom of the 'f' on 'ft' is directly above the 'v' on superlative.

Mark IV = 'c' of word 'certified' is directly below 'ch' in 'chronometer' and the bottom of the 'f' on 'ft' is directly above the 'i' on superlative.

I would say this is a mk v

Simplest version I know:

Mk 4 = crossbar on f is offset from t. Mk5 and Mk 6 it isn't.
Mk 6 curly S.

Job done.

Nice Mark V Sub...definitely not a Mark IV - wrong coronet for a Mark IV. 1972 case backs are found up to around 3.5 million serial numbers. Possibly a few might have later serial numbers.

From my experience, normally a 2.82 serial number is within range for a 1970 to early 1971 case back stamping.

I have left my Red Sub in the safe deposit box for almost 5 months. Still hoping to see some patina developing. Envy those with very nicely developed patina. My Red Sub currently is in light ivory ..... still a long way to go to develop those patina?

At 2.8mil the caseback should have a late 70 or early 71 date stamp. The date stamp was not phased out until the mid 3.5mil range as Springer pointed out above. A correctly dated caseback shouldn't be too hard to find.

I have had several 3.3mil 1675's, 5513's, 1680's, and 5512's all of which had date stamps of 72.

For what it's worth, I have a red 2.95 serial with IV.70 stamp.

Maybe! Mine was in a safe for 40 years to get to a mustard color, which was gone after 6 months of daily wear once I purchase it. I posted "before and after" pics here somewhere.
