Owning a 5513 and wanting a 1680. Anyone have both?
Good evening to all.
Since I have not purchased a watch in quiet a while, I had my mind set to buy a more modern, and tech advance watch. Was debating between an FPJ Chrono Bleu, or otherwise a Royal Oak. Both of these would add diversity as I own nothing like them in my collection. I should also note that I have a small collection, and I could generally use the diversity and add something different. For some reason I am nevertheless going against logic, and have the urge to buy another sub, a 1680. The wearability and fun factor of my 5513 is simply astonishing, which leads me to this. I find myself keep bouncing back and forth that the 1680 will not add anything new to the table, and that it is too similar to the 5513. Other times I convince myself that they are completely different. Looking for some suggestions from guys that have both. I should add that I have zero interest in a red 1680. A premium for a red line is not something I am willing to pay for. I respect others that are happy to, but a 1680 white is just as appealing, dare I say more. To me that is. Forget the idea, or pursue it? |

I would chose a 1680 over an FP journe or a RO all day long, even if I have a 5513.
Can not go wrong with a nice white 1680 ! |

I have a MF 5513 and a Red 1680. They wear totally differently (high-hat v. dome) and it's really nice having both. I also happen to have Royal Oak (15300), and that is something worth adding--probably before a second vintage Rolex diver-- because it's just a stunner that works in many different settings.
Never owned a Journe, but they are beautiful, but my feeling is the Royal Oak beats it in terms of the cool factor all day long. P.S. You have great taste. Everything you're considering is killer IMO. |

Id go for a Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph to enjoy something completely different.
If you have the vintage bug, you will end up buying the 1680 in the near future though. |

I have two 5513s and a red 1680. They each have different personalities, so to speak, therefore I believe that you would enjoy having both a 5513 and a white 1680. That said, and even though I've never owned a Royal Oak, I'd purchase the AP first. I mean, c'mon, a Royal Oak and a 5513 Submariner--that's a knockout combo!

I have a 1675, a white 1680 and a 5512. The 1680 and 5512 have lumi service dials, while the 1675 is white tritium. I love them all, but to me, the 1675 is the dressiest, the 1680 the nicest, and the 5513 the best all around watch. With the 1675, the Pepsi insert and silver date wheel simply sets it apart from all of my other watches...I also have a new black insert that I've never used, and a lumi service dial still in the package that might make it into the case one day. It is a 1.7MM serial from about 1967, so it has a very thin, almost dainty case compared to the other 2. The 1680 is from 1977 and has the beautiful top hat crystal that simply makes the watch stand out. This watch has the best case of the bunch, and has a lumi service dial/insert and hands and you can't forget the silver open 6/9 date wheel....the 5512 is my newest/last purchase...it is a very polished case, but it looks good to my eye (the lugs are much thinner than the 1680), but it has a beautiful lumi service dial/hands/insert, and the clean no-date 4 line dial is something else. It puts a smile on my face every time I think about the fact that this is the same watch model that the king of cool wore. On a nato the Subs rock....the GMT stays on a bracelet.

My 5513 always gets more wrist time than my 16800, so much more practical and easier to wear.
Two very different watches, in more position I think I'd look at a RP of FP- I like the idea of diversity within ones collection. |

Have them both.
They wear different, the tophat is completely different to the dome of the 5513. Go for that 1680, it's a fantastic watch..... |

Point well taken on the red vs. white 1680s. I've owned both, and aesthetically I actually prefer the white. I get that red is more collectible and has a cool factor, but certainly not at double the price. Good luck in your search. |

the 1680 bug has sort of bitten me. tbh, ive never been the biggest fan of them but have found myself drooling over them recently. i think id have to get a red though. i have a 16800 with amazing patina and i think a 1680 white would be a bit redundant. but the 100% price difference between a white and red is really a tough pill to swallow. dont know if that is worth it to me. im even hesitant to add another Sub date at all given that i have a 16800.

I'll end up adding a white at some point, but Red was the one to own first in my book. Both worth owning and both worth their pricing. Just remember market dictates pricing, and it says Red is worth more (at least today). I love the Red.
Know OP asked about 5513 and that's on the list and would own both in a heartbeat . |

Since acquiring my lovely maxi 5513, the question of getting the 1680 has been lingering om my mind so this thread is quite timely (and informative).
Essentially the 1680 is the 5513 with date, but aesthetically seems to look different. I've tried it and it has a different feel, with the top hat and cyclops. I also think its price is quite affordable at the moment for a vintage watch (not the Red sub though...). All said however, I think for someone who already owns a 5513 looking to expand into vintage Rolex territory and craving the iconic cyclops date window look perhaps the 1675 might be a more tempting proposition, with its equally iconic Pepsi/Pan-Am insert, I think it would be a standout to any collection and would differentiate itself quite well. |

I have a 1680 but I'm also admittingly a "date" guy... so I never really considered a 5513. I do envy their clean, symmetric look with a dome finish - which makes them especially photogenic!
However, I do get a good amount of use out of the date function, plus to me it adds a whole other dynamic to the watch... for example, just looking down at my watch and seeing the "open 9" brings a smile to my face. Not that you need a datewheel with open numbers, but it just adds a touch of character. With all that being said, I do like the idea of adding the FPJ Chrono or AP RO first before the 1680 at this point since you already have the 5513. After you get one of those you can re-evaluate if you still crave the 1680. You could always go after later down the road especially since it's the white you're after (and not the red) as there are more examples of those floating around. Good luck and let us know what you do! |

Both are wonderful iconic references, You may consider a 16750 or another vintage brand (speedy, sm300).
