Buying new or second hand?
In the process of buying a Rolex and was wondering everyone's view on buying new from an AD or second hand? Looking at the Explorer which is £4300 new or could get 3900 unworn second hand. What are the pros and cons of buying second hand as oppose to new other than the fact it's cheaper.
Thanks all |

Complete piece of mind- you've already stated the saving of £400 the other route.

If I can afford new, I'm going new. If I must have it and preowned pricing gets it into my range or offers 50% savings, then, I'm all for it!

£3900 is less than a 10% discount, something which is probably achievable at an AD as well
then again said the used model may be negotiable as well which makes my point moot but something to think about

Heres 2 ways of looking at it.....
If you buy new from an AD, you are the first owner and you have a warranty...However if you flip it you will lose money. (in some cases, a lot of money) If you buy a pre-owned, you are not the first owner, no warranty...However if you sell it, you can get what you paid for it. In both cases I speak of selling quickly after buying. (i will never buy new again...example: I bought a new GMT Master 2 Yellow Gold (Green dial) for 27 grand with healthy discount from AD.... You can get one that is a couple of years old for 20 grand on Bobs Watches..now if you buy it from Bobs Watches for 20 grand and then turn around and sell it right away, you can still get 20 grand for it) |

If the watch is genuine, brand new condition and from a reputable agent, any saving is a bonus.

when buying second hand or even BNIB from grey dealer i believe dealers only pay tax on the margin so will be in the single digit %s

New from AD gets you peace of mind of warranty and knowing that watch is not stolen or tampered with. If you buy to keep, probably way to go. For informed flippers, other venues worth investigating.

Depends on the discount. I like buying used mostly.....let someone else take the hit on depreciation. Just like a car...
Umless the new deal is great or it is a limited piece |

Unworn 2nd hand from a reputable seller is the way to go IMO.

To me, pre-owned would only be a valid choice with a much more substantial price difference, or if the model I wanted was no longer available new.

For that amount of money I'd go new. It would have to be 2x the savings you mention to start me thinking about pre owned.

Unfortunately none of the watches I want are currently made, so I have to go second hand. I would rather save $$ and buy from a reputable seller on TRF anyway, even if I had the choice.

Used is the way to go! Unless price difference is really small

Three of my four Rolex are pre-owned. One of those however was a safe queen owned by a collector with.....wait for it.....almost 500 luxury watches in his collection and a significant number of those were Rolex! He'd only ever 'tried on' the Pepsi stick dial GMT I bought from him so I consider that a new watch when I bought it.....and I've not worn it either! It's now in my safe in its box and has almost doubled in value since I've owned it.
My other 2 pre-owned were good pre-owned examples but without box and papers and both have been through RSC for service and re-finishing by Rolex. They are like the day they were new. The only new Rolex I own I purchased tax free from an AD boutique at the airport, and could still flip it now and lose nothing because of the saving I made buying duty free. I'm a little more reluctant to walk down my local high street and pay AD sticker price on another new one though, when good pre-owned examples are so much cheaper and the first owner has already taken the big hit on depreciation. |

As a vintage guy, the models I choose are generally not available new or new-old-stock, so secondary market is my chosen venue. I have bought from authorized dealers, but only "pre-owned" for the authenticity and the dealer's warranty. Overall, I have been satisfied even in the secondary market: minor problems can usually be corrected fairly easily. I had a mainspring go on my Explorer II once, but even that was not horribly costly using a reputable independent watchmaker.

Always buy used from a reputable seller. You will save hundreds to thousands of dollars. The watches are always in like new condition.

For the sake of £400 I'd go new from an AD, you should be able to negotiate a discount especially if your not going down the 0% finance route. You'll also have your name on the warranty and a 5 year warranty whereas if the watch from a grey dealer is older than July last year you'll only have a 3 year warranty.

For £400 go for the peace of mind at the AD. You'll be its first owner and that kind of feels good.
If you can plan it with a trip out of Heathrow sometime then you save the 20% tax instantly. A very good deal. But it's all about how you feel with the watch. Just because you paid full AD price will not mean you will feel as if you missed out. You'll soon forget how much it cost and be at one with your explorer. Trust me, you will be looking for the next before you gripe over a £400 difference. |

The term second hand makes me laugh a little. It's an old time saying. My grandmother used to say second hand when referring to things she bought during WWII. We got it second hand during the war...you couldn't get them new!!

you are overlooking the cost of the first service, which will exceed the savings. New watch should have a longer warranty and peace of mind.

If the savings were good I had no issue buying a few SS watches used, but for PM I will only buy new and unworn.

I am a TRF trusted seller, groupie... Rolex makes a tank and rarely is the warranty needed in the first 10 years... Save the money, buy slightly used, save thousands, and get 99.9% the product... IMHO of course

Like other said, if the difference is only £400, I'd buy new from AD, or get a pre-owned from a trusted seller to save £1000!

For that small price difference buy brand new from an ad. And that way you build a relationship with your ad.
