Vintage DateJust question
Hi All. I have been looking at purchasing a vintage TT DateJust 160133 made in the mid to late 80s. My questions are:
1) Will the old plexiglass crystal be a problem as far water leaking into case. I heard as the old plexiglass crystals age, they can distort/shrink some and the seal can ultimately leak water in the case ? 2) How much flex/bend in bracelet is too much before it has to be replaced? 3) Not known if its been serviced ever. 4) If I am not particularly into vintage watches, is it worth buying just because it is 60% less expensive than a new comparable DateJust. See photos below Thank you! |

I would say the band has medium stretch for a jubilee, its far from falling apart, the crystal and gaskets generally need regular replacing, I would at least get it pressure tested, a service would be good as they would clean up the case a bit also

It has a Tapestry Dial, that is a nice upgrade from the standard Champagne Dial...BONUS!

Classic 80's tapestry two tone. Great looking piece. That band looks to have plenty of years left.
I have never had an issue with plexis leaking over the years. Replacing the plexi is relatively cheap. If you get it, have it serviced and/or pressure tested. Replace the plexi if needed.

With proper servicing, you'd have no problems with a vintage DJ. It should hold up just as well as the newer models. That's a classic TT version. Good luck.

I just stumbled upon this. I have a very similar watch (see avatar), purchased new in '84 or '85. I have had it serviced 3 or 4 times in 30 years and gotten a new crystal each time. Not a big expense at all. Watch has never had leakage or issues. And I too love the Tapestry dial. Distinguishes it from the standard dials nicely, but is subtle.
Late to the party, but another perspective.

Re: If I am not particularly into vintage watches, is it worth buying just because it is 60% less expensive than a new comparable DateJust. If your not fully interested in vintage watches then, really, no amount of "discount" is going to change things. What others have said is all true (plastic crystals that have been pressure tested are A-OK, the stretch on the inherently flexible Jubilee bracelet is fine, etc); still if what you really want is a newer/contemporary Datejust, and that's what you'll be pining for, my advice is to go that direction. Cheers! _______ Instagram: @onthedial |
