My son's first fountain pen...

Spent some quality time with my 9 year teaching him the basics of fountain pens. He's been eyeing my collection for quite some time now so I got him his first pen on Amazon to learn the technique before he one day takes over the old man's writers. I'm using an Aurora BTW.

Super COOL! You have him starting a great road filled with satisfaction and wonder.

You can download practice sheets so he can practice his cursive writing, since they can no longer be bothered with it in school.

A great thing to share.

Kudos to the OP for passing that skill on.

That and typing apparently. I asked my wife the other day as she was typing my son's paper for him if they had typing class yet. She said no, they do not have it any more. WTF??

So we are not going to teach you how to write cursive nor type. Our shoots and common core is breeding a generation of idiots. My kids had cursive before they started common core at their school and I too have taught them both to write with a FP. My 13 year old boy is so/so, my 12 year old daughter who loves to write is incredible. She has a Lamy Safari with a media nib. I will buy her a MB legrand when she graduates HS if she still had the passion.

Thanks guys. Nothing compares to having your kids wanting to be like you. When you think about it, we have such an awesome responsibility in the molding of our children. I'm sure my fellow fathers can relate.

Michael, great idea teaching your son to write in "Cursive Style Writing," over just learning how to print. My son did learn Cursive Writing but then that was 22 years ago!!!

I gave him a nice fountain pen plus a bottle of MontBlanc Ink a couple of years ago because he said he was interested in learning to use a fountain pen…..so far…..he hasn't picked it up. Oh well…..maybe one day he will!!!

It's also sad to learn they no longer teach typing in school as well…..don't get me started on simple math skills where the younger generations need a calculator to do these operations of adding, multiplying, subtracting and dividing!!!

And as for printing…..what older children/teenager's actually do print without abbreviations when they are texting…..

Leo, try using the Tom Sawyer painting the fence technique: start writing with your fountain pen and act like its the funnest thing you've ever done then when your son asks you if he can write also, make him trade you something for the privilege!

Great dad points there! It's a lovely gift and wonderful for father-son bonding.

I remember being captivated by my dad's fountain pen when I was a boy. As I got a bit older I tried out a few cheap cartage pens before being given my first "proper" fountain pen as a gift from dad when I was 14 which I treasure

16 years later, I'm lucky enough to have a modest collection of pens and still write with a fountain daily. The sensation of writing with one is incomparable as is the novelty of filling a pen from a bottle (boys will be boys). It's also a thing of beauty to distract from the drudgery of most of what I need to write.

When I (hopefully) have kids in the future I hope I will be able to share this passion over another generation.

Michael, thanx for the great idea but he is 31 yrs. old so I do not think your technique will work on him. He probably would laugh at me and tell me where to go!!!

Take care…..Leo

My 5 year old son is left handed, not so sure my fountain pens are an option for him. He'll have to be content with things that go bang and my watches.

I say that any parent with a child in common core needs to demand that the teachers fill out an I.D.10.T. form and see how long it takes them to get it. If it's not more or less instantly, pull your kids and go to the next school. Lol

I agree completely. About a year ago almost to the day I was, unfortunately, attending a funeral and I met with the pastor at the end. I would say he was around 30 years old. He went to over to sign the guest book as everyone there was visiting with each other. I noticed he pulled out a nice but modest fountain pen to sign the book. No one else noticed but I was very impressed. I don't think I'll ever forget that.
