To Trade or Not
So about 6 months ago i bought a Explorer 2 16570 (2004 serial) black face on impulse. It was not my first watch as i had previously had the Polar edition of the same watch.
Problem is I just don't LOVE it. It's a nice watch but i does not make me grin every time i look at it. So i have been offered a trade deal on a Sea Dweller 16600 (2006 serial) in exchange for my my Explorer 2 and my 4 year old Omega Speedmaster Professional - straight swap with no cash either way. Worth noting the sea dweller has been rolex serviced so has 6 months of their warranty to run as well as 6 months after that of dealer warranty. If i did the deal it would leave me with a new Sea Dweller and my Panerai PAM005. I am torn on doing the deal - mainly as i do like the speedmaster but don't ware it often as the 16570 tends to be worn with cuffs for work and the Panerai is the watch of choice for weekend casual. Would love to hear peoples views on this potential deal as well as view on if the Sea Dweller is suitable for wear with shirt cuffs? |

Agree the SD is the piece to target but not for your 2 watches.....one or the other and some cash from you should seal the trade. FWIW, I've worn my SD with French cuffs for the past 8 years!
Post pics of the SD!

without looking up the exact Speedmaster model and its value, it does not sound like a good financial swap to me.
Agree Brett that I'd do one watch + cash to get the SD....assuming the SD would make you grin when you look at it. Otherwise why bother? |

It sounds like you're giving up too much for this deal. As other suggested, one watch plus money out of pocket should do it.

issue is after buying the Panerai i am short on funds hence the thinking of a trade but seems i may be more sensible to try and sell these separately

Just to put some UK values in here as seeing everyone posting is from the other side of the Atlantic
UK average price of a complete Sea Dweller 16600 is circa £4750-£4850 Going rate for a tidy Explorer 2 16570 - £3500 - £3600 Going rate for a tidy Speedmaster Pro 3570 - £2250 - £2350 Always have to expect a mark down when trading with a dealer so looking like selling separately is the best way for me to go but with that comes the issues of selling privately. The trade in values i have bee offered are £1600 for the speedy pro and £2750 of the Explorer 2 which is a combined trade value of £4350 so the the dealer has then agreed to drop the price of the Sea Dweller to make the trade... much to think about for me it seems |

I would not do that trade and I would definitely not part with the Speedmaster unless you are not wearing it

In essence i have accepted both watches would need to go for the one as i have no cash free at the moment after buying the PAM005 a few weeks ago so its nore a case of what you say - quick hassle free trade or a longer more involved ale that should net me a bit of extra money at the end of it.... |

I have ended up doing these types of deals a few times and you need to be prepared to accept that you're probably getting hosed on your trade value. I did a similar trade recently with my Speedmaster and I regret it. I would just trade the Explorer II and add cash for the SD. You may be adding cash but you won't get as screwed on the trade value for two nice watches.

Trade value is always lower, and dealers need to make money. You also need to factor in the reduction of hassle, meaning you don't need to deal with selling your watch(es). That's worth something.
So, in general, these used Explorer IIs are trading/selling in the $4K range, and used Speedy Pros in the $2500-$3k range. A nice full-set SD (16600), especially with a Rolex service, would be in the $6300-$6500 range to buy. The deal proposed by the OP, while not great, is not that bad either, really, based just on the numbers. |

Would definitely not do the trade. The speedy and the Explorer 2 are keepers for sure in my opinion.

do not do this. the explorer 2 is worth 4,500-5k.
the SD 16600 is worth 5-5.5k. the difference is not a Speedy PRO it is 500-1000 bucks from you.
