DD2: TRF General Opinion

Wondering what the census here is on the DD2 now that it's been almost a year since the DD40 has been unveiled.

I've noticed some members have turned their DD2s into DD40s, and also noticed less and less DD2s in the for sale section of the forum.

I for one have been confused by Rolex. I wanted a DD2 until the 40 was announced and shortly thereafter. Now I am not sure anymore. I def have gotten over wanting the DD2 but not even sure if I should go for the 40. The short life span and intro of new model made me realize that the 36mm is the real classic Day Date.

Thoughts?

IMHO the DD2 was always wrong. It was all out of proportion. Rolex clearly agree and have rectified their mistake. The DD40 gets it right, and will be every bit as classic as the 36.

Prefer 40 for proportions and for the improved movement.
No contest for me.

I'd be happy with a classic WG of either the 36mm or 40, no desire for the DDII.

Go for the one that sing your song
I love DD2 because it's truly a big daddy of Rolex. Big and unique. Something that is so badass, even Rolex cannot handle the heat
DD40 with the same configuration looks feminine to my eye

I think the classic 36mm is the perfect watch for women and men with small wrist sizes. If your wrist is 6.5in or larger you have to go for the 40mm. They got it right with the DD40, DDII's proportions are slightly off. This is just my opinion, not meaning to offend the DDII owners.

I go back and forth.

Hard to decide, but I like them both.

The 2 is a bit sportier, which I tend to prefer.

I think both the 36mm and 40mm look perfectly proportioned so I don't think you can go wrong with either! Given the choice, I'd go for the 40mm though

I think the DayDateII is a younger man of means' watch, while the original DD and DD40 are the more distinguished, older gentleman's more subtle and elegant understated watch. I purchased my DDII at 33 and have worn it every day since for the past 5 years now. I think it's the finest time piece, with the most perfect proportions, that Rolex has produced - but of course that is my opinion.

I guess more of a question of what will the DD2's legacy be?

Agreed; I prefer every single thing about the 40 mm compared to the "II". The new large Day-Date's proportions don't have the bloated look of the previous model, and I expect that it'll be around for much longer than its predecessor.

Can't go wrong with the classic 36 mm either, though.

Only time will tell, we will have to see what the opinion is in 10 or 20 years.

I like both, particularly the blue wave dial WG DDII.

More than likely, aside from the one mentioned above, I would go DD40.

I own neither but I like them both. I get the proportions comments but also like a more substantial look on my wrist so I could easily see getting a DD2. I guess it would really come down to the dials that are available, particularly like the Platinum options, but favoring Platinum just means I'll have to wait much longer before I get one. Though with the trend to be against the DD2 perhaps some good deals will appear on the Grey market.

Love the DDII -- thinking of picking up a WG with blue wave dial.

DDII in platinum is impressive in a way the DD40 never will be.

but, the DD40 movement and some of the dials are really sweet, too.

oh, and i LOVE the DDII blue wave dial and concentric arabic ivory dial.

i dunno, plenty to like about both.

x2

I wear a DJ II and fits fine but i do like my watches a bit smaller as my DD 36mm feels he best. So imo a DD40 would be a nice sweet spot.

I tend to think that if you're going to do a dress watch, do a dress watch. The proportions of the DD40 are dressier and more elegant, imo.

DDII looked funny to me, even long before I started reading this forum.

Personally like the new version much more.

I never considered the DDII to be a dress watch, seems more everyday if not outright sports

I've never considered an oyster case to be a dress watch. Any of them

don't own either, but I have many vintage 36mm day-dates, and I can say I don't even like them all that much. I never warmed up to the DD2 either. The first time I saw the DD40 however It really sung to me.

It will be a long time away, but eventually I would like to get one.

maybe this one

I like the sporty modern DDII; the others just don't seem to stand out for me the way the DDII does. They are beautiful watches but the DDII seems to say Rolex is part of the modern world in a big way.

I do like the proportions on the DD40. While I also like the new dial options as well, there are some DD2 dial options I miss like the concentric Arabics.
