Buy brand new DSSD or buy a used one?

Hello Gents!

This will be my first "expensive" watch purchase, probably not my last. I am in love with the Rolex DSSD. I've been to an AD and the price tag is $12 which is a decent amount of cash. I also see DavidSW selling a few from time to time, I think with a serial of V, for like $8, i "think" that dates the watch at around 2007, correct?

I guess my question is two fold, should I buy a watch from an authorized dealer locally or just buy from a trusted dealer here? Also the new-used delta is $4 what would be the "risks" of buying a watch that is already almost 10 years old if my math is correct?

Thanks all

If you buy the Deep Blue and can source one get it new from an AD. For the normal version there are big discounts around either from ADs or reputable sellers for new ones and even lower prices for used examples.

The Rolex Deepsea Sea Dweller has been introduced by Rolex at BaselWorld 2008; which means it can not be from 2007.

I've owned the DSSD, and purchased mine used. The difference between buying a new one + tax, and a gently used one is around $4K as you wrote. To me that's a considerable amount of money. The DSSD is built like a tank, and the used one I purchased (through a trusted TRF seller) was mint, I couldn't really tell it from a new one. To me I'd like someone else to take the depreciation hit on a watch.

Depending on who you ask, watches need regular servicing at around the 7-10 year mark, which would run around $600 or so from a RSC.

Some people don't service watches until there is an issue, so it's possible to go many many years without visiting a service center.

At the same time, I hear dealers will easily drop the price on new DSSD's (black face, not the D Blue) since they are not a big sellers (nowhere near the Sub).

IMHO pick up a gently used one at $7500 USD, and save the rest of your money for the next Rolex- yes, there will probably be more in your future!

You should do what you're comfortable doing.

Buying a watch from around 2008 might...might mind you, mean a $600 + full service is needed. Maybe not. The watch could go for a few more years with no need.

Buy from a local guy and you do a face to face deal.

Are you ok bank wiring $$$ to a person based on a fine reputation? You may save some money that way. Your call.

I personally prefer new watches because if you buy used you may need a service (= $$$ and 4-6weeks). For peace of mind I tend to go new. Talk to takuya aka Thanh Do, He'll take care of you!

Buy used still under Rolex warranty. Why not save $2k and still be covered if an issue arises.

Buy older version and save $4k towards another nice watch, such as a Rolex Explorer!

As stated. DBlue new is a good option. For the black dial I would suggest used unless you can get a discount from your AD.

DSSD - Buy pre owned, save the money.

As others have stated the $4K can go into another watch - you're 2K from an pre owned Exp II 41mm.

there are small differences in font and spacing between mark i, mark ii, mark iii, and mark iv dials. but overall identical watches.

Go to a different AD. Let them know you're ready to buy and surely they will work with you.

Everyone has different opinions on the new vs. used debate, neither are wrong as it's a matter of personal preference.

My opinion - It's your fist (and definitely wont be your last ) buy new from an AD and enjoy the experience of your first Rolex watch. You'll never forget your first!

Good luck with whatever you decide

You won't have a problem buying from David, everyone here loves him (I've bought two from him and sent him two friends who also bought).

I'm a big fan of buying pre-owned. You save a bunch of money, save on taxes, and really these are pretty solid watches, so the odds of having a problem are pretty slim. The savings more than make up for whatever a service will cost you, when the time comes.

And, if you decide to flip it for something else, depending on the market and how long you've had it, it may not cost you much to have enjoyed it for a few years.

Thats what i would do. As the DSSD is a pretty big watch it would be nice to be able to have options like an Exp II if you dont want to lug around such a big watch all the time.

Do a gut check and do what feels right, along with doing your homework re seller that is other than AD.

FWIW I bought mine BNIB in 2010 from this forum and from none other than Bodybump (aka Oscar). I told a friend what a great deal I received and he bought one for himself the next day. My Deepsea is still running strong and within COSC standards of accuracy.

Happy hunting!

I was gonna pay cash, but if no deal I would finance it zero percent for 12 months

Actually had a dream last night about buying one lol

I can't speak specifically on buying used as I have not done so before, but I can say I highly recommend DavidSW as I'm sure many on here would agree.

I do believe there are some models if I were interested in purchasing I would highly consider used. This definitely being one of them.

You do what you want, but the difference between new and used is the price of another nice used watch.
I would certainly buy used as I would
Plan to wearing often and this is not a collectors piece. It's going to get scratched up either way, let someone else take the depreciation hit!
