Sea-Dweller 4000 now with glossy dial?

I was at AD today as I'm visiting Europe and the store manager (who sold me a SD4000 2 yrs ago) told me to hold on to that "old" model because he said Rolex is switching to glossy dial on it?! He didn't have one in stock to inspect.

Anyone heard or seen anything about this?

Don't know the truth, but that would be all I need to make a purchase.

Dial variations have come out pre- or post-Basel. The D-Blue for example, and I believe the blue sunburst dial on the gold Sub just suddenly appeared a few years ago without any Basel fanfare.

I love the matte dial on my SD4000, but who knows, Rolex may change it up.

I was at basel...didn't hear this. I don't think this is the case..the 116600 dial can look glossy in some lighting as it is but it's matte. And no point for rolex to change that and honestly don't believe it at all.

Well if they change it that early in production (i.e. only two years after it started) this means the value for the early models will skyrocket.

The matte dial is nice. It makes for a great visual difference (besides the cyclops) of the SD and the Sub. I hope they keep it matte.

i've looked at the SD4k several times up close and just don't get why people actually like the matte dial. To me it makes the watch appear grey/black and washed out. The piano black glossy dial on the sub and dssd look so much sharper and attractive to me. I was told the matte is due to being easier to see at depths when diving as the gloss can reflect but surely the DSSD would be matte also as it goes even deeper?

Rather they should make the bezel more matte, the dial and bezel should match imho, like on the Subcs.

The flat blue to sunburst blue on the 116613 didn't happen at Basel, did it?

A matte ceramic bezel on the SD4K would be a good move to match the satin dial. It would also be another way to differentiate the SD and keep the demand up. I'm not sure that a gloss dial would help it sell better.

Only downside is the lack of AR coating on the crystal results in quite a lot of reflection which gives the matte dial a gloss look a lot of the time.

I have a matte bezel on my 114060 and have compared it in quite a few different lighting conditions against my 116600 and there is still an obvious contrast between the satin dial and matte bezel

Here's a couple of pics

DSSD has the same matte dial as the SD4K. At least the original black one does.

It was not a sale tactic, but I wasn't trying to buy either of the model. And it wouldn't count as a model change, just a dial adjustment, just like many other Rolex watches have had changes to the dials (think back to the font changes to the early DSSDs vs post V9xxx ones or how many Mark dials of the 5513). Neither of these "adjustments" were done at Basel, it is just Rolex adjusting production during the year.

I don't know what the truth is, he said the change was coming, and simply suggested that I hold on to my early one - not that I had any plans on selling it - my most worn watch by far!

Rick, you hit the nail on the head in your very first sentence....you just don't get it!

I'm just kidding with you buddy! But seriously, for some of us that have long history with Rolex Sub's, the Satin dial is an homage to the watches we grew up loving. In fact for us, the could have gone with a more "Matte" finish instead of the Satin which is somewhere in between!

Holding them both under different light now. They look identical except the DSSD has the curved glass and SDc is flat so I think that can effect the look of dial a bit.
