Stigma of YG

As many know, I'm considering trading a few steel stunners for some yellow gold. But as I've spent the last few weeks searching old posts, there seems to be a lot of conflict surrounding YG...

"Showing up to the race track wearing yellow gold is too much of a statement"

"I wouldn't wear a yellow gold sub around my clients at work"

"Yellow gold is in your face and flashy, I prefer more discrete WG"

But then the other side is "no one recognizes what you're wearing anyways, they probably think it's a Michael kors, wear what you want, if you're wearing a Rolex that's already very flashy anyways, etc"

Does anyone have a good article or a more thorough explanation of the stigma surrounding yellow gold and why it is so controversial?

I cannot share an article with a good explanation that may explain the stigma of YG. Sorry...

One thing I can say is that for me, YG, has been an acquired taste. The more I look at watches and the more SS watches I own, the more I start to like and appreciate YG.

Perhaps it is a maturity thing but now, at 28, when I see someone wearing a YG watch I have nothing but admiration and I think absolutely nothing negative based on the watch alone.

If I ever have the balls to liquidate my entire collection or make enough money to afford a "grail" it will absolutely be YG.

Personally, I see yellow gold as more of a moment watch, for example 30th,40th,50th birthday present. A watch to mark an occasion of significance that would be worn on such occasions again. This of course is entirely down to opinion. Personally, if I were to yellow gold on a daily basis or in some of my professional environments I'll look like I'm working for the Mafia. That being said the yellow gold day date is something I'm extremely interested in. But my feelings are that a watch of that impact is better left for me later down the line. I would go with rose gold, despite being gold I just find it less flashy in some way. Again this is just personal opinion.

It is too subjective a question really.

I'm net generally a fan of YG watches, although when broken up with something lack black rubber (i.e. on a YM or RO) then it can look really good.

My personal view is that YG is something that goes in and out of fashion, a bit like white cars here in the UK. When it's hot, it's very hot, but when it's cold, it's very cold.

As for whether it is too flashy, it is for me. I had a two-tone Sub and found it too much for me. It received way too many comments and I just never got comfortable with it.

There will of course be people on here that say it doesn't matter what others think, and in a perfect world, of course it doesn't. But in my world, where I need my clients to hire me and not think they are paying me too much money, I have to take their reaction into consideration.

The people I know with Gold watches are generally those far more successful than me who don't need to care what others may or may not think about them. These are the same people that are happy to drive a Bentley or a Ferrari, whereas when I had my Porsche I used to park it at the back of car packs when visiting clients so they didn't see it.

If you like Yellow Gold watches and you don't need to worry about what anyone else thinks, then go for it. If you are someone that worries about what people think, then best to avoid.

Just my view, others on here will I'm sure have differing opinions.

I don't have an article, but can speak from personal experience. I'm 47, dress mostly professional/casual. Have a mix of PT, SS, and TT collection. I started with only SS, moved into TT, then YG, and finally PT. I moved my YG for the PT, but have always maintained SS, and TT. People DO NOTICE when you are wearing a full YG Rolex....they may not say anything, but you will see eyes gravitating towards your wrist as you walk by. It didn't bother me, I guess it's just how you feel personally. I only moved my YG to get the platinum. I still have TT, SS, and wear all my watches pretty equally. I wouldn't hesitate getting full YG again, just maybe a little smaller version, 36-40mm.(had the YG Skydweller) I think it also has a lot to do with how you present yourself, when wearing certain pieces.....just my 2cents. :)

Discount my opinion because I AM an old man, and according to many posts, I'm 'entitled' to wear YG. After you have a few SS and TT Rolexes, you kinda want a YG Day Date President to cap it off. It's a progression.

MY YG is for family times and home entertaining. I'm not flashing it around.

Personally I don't think such a stigma exist. It's an opinion, nothing more. Bottom line is it's a personal preference.

It's just a matter of personal taste. If you like YG, then go for it and enjoy it.

I'm 48. Personally, I have always found yellow gold on a man's watch ostentatious. I feel the same way about diamonds on a man's watch. Personally, I find those features to be feminine, also.

I work at a major law firm in nyc. Nicer timepieces are common. I haven't seen many YG watches on men at my firm either on the part of us natives or visitors. I do see them on women, though.

All that being said, I like the YG Daytona, though I probably won't ever own one.

It's just a matter of personal taste.

This is a picture taken a few days ago when I bought my first Minivan! Yes I said Minivan. I am fortunate to have a wife who provides really well financially and we can provide a great life for our family. I just turned 33 and bought my first all gold piece and have loved every second of it. I am also a big gold fan necklace and rings and stuff like that. I wear all my jewelry with my TT sub most of the time. When I got my 18078 I wore all my jewelry and man is it a lot of gold so now I usually tone it down a bit if I have my Day Date on. But anyway sorry for rambling the gentleman I met the other day who was wearing his Day Date was an average person who bought his one Rolex because he saw successful people wearing them so he said once he felt he hit a certain level of success it would be time for his. So he picked his up a year or 2 ago used and has loved it ever since. In talking with him he seemed to be a humble person with good taste. So I guess I will get to my point I am a loud out going type of person who loves all watches and has an obsession with yellow stuff. He is the opposite type of person who wanted a nice piece to mark a milestone in his life. I also got mine to mark a milestone and hope to get a few more to mark other milestones. But for now love what you got and don't lust at what you don't. Ps. Mine is on bottom and I recommend a gold piece in everyone's collection the feel is AWESOME!

I believe that white gold watches are complete waste of time, either stainless steel or yellow gold, truthfully I could care less what others around me think. if you have a yellow gold watch and wear it when you want. If you don't want others around you to know you've got a $50,000 watch buy yourself a $50 watch as well and wear it around your work colleagues and customers

Agree. I had a YG Daytona on leather which was fine but do I really want a YG YM on my wrist? Just not me!! Suits some people just as does diamonds, emeralds and rubies on the bezel, men's rings with diamonds and thick gold gucci neck chains...each to their own....i buy watches for myself I don't need someone else to know that its worth $50 / $ 70 or $ 100 000....

My view is that far too much concern is given to this issue by some members of our group. The vast, vast majority of people don't notice or care what you wear. Buy what you like and enjoy it.

Some will say YG is too flashy, some will say any Rolex is too flashy, some a 43mm, some a WG is a waste of money - some people will say just about everything you can think of so at the end of the day just get what suits you and your lifestyle best.

It is your wrist, not their's.

Some things just become lazy symbols, visual clichés if you like. Yellow gold is very noticeable, it thus has become a sign of showing wealth...admirable in some societies, vulgar in others.
Certainly, here in Britain, 'showing off' is considered vulgar, flaunting wealth is a form of rudeness to others less fortunate.
That's the 'baggage' of yellow gold; whether you care what such a watch 'says' about you is another matter. My own view would be...fine, but in small doses. Thus a yellow Day Date on a leather strap, tasty. The same watch on a gold bracelet...vulgar.
Odd world we live in.

The only stigma of YG is only in that persons stereo typed head.

Here in Brazil there is a stigma surrounding YG Watches, specially Rolex, that these are the type of watches worn by mafiosos. That said, I really dont care about it, as I've seen plenty of succesful people wearing it. It sure is a polarizing issue, and it wont pass unnonticed like a SS would. But if you like it, and dont care about what others may think, go for it!! I did, and I dont regret.

IMO it's all about how you comport yourself. Act like an ass and YG will only accentuate the opinion. Act classy and YG looks timeless.

I wear mostly PM and have never been self-conscious about it.

"Stigma" probably not the choice word.

I always believe that you wear the watch, the watch doesn't wear you. If you're truly comfortable with YG then it's for you. If you are concerned with other people's perception of you and what you are wearing then you answered your question, it's not for you. Wearing a watch should never cause you to"pause" and think about what someone else is thinking.

I believe it is the person wearing the watch more so than the watch itself. There may be more protocol in a work setting, but otherwise it is confidence not arrogance that rules the day. I drive my wife's minivan to Walmart, bring my kids to their sports teams, cut the grass from time to time and go with the family to the local restaurant; all while wearing gold watches. It doesn't stand out because I don't choose to stand out. If you open doors for others, rather than expect them to be opened for you because you're feeling important wearing an expensive watch - you are one of the people who should not wear gold.

If YG is flashy , vulgar or for old men. I guess I am all the above. From personal experience , more comments about my watch is made when wearing my Batman GMT or my white faced Milguss. I have YG DD , PT DD and a PT Daytona to mention a few and it is the SS models that get the comments. My current Dailey watch is the Gold Daytona

Gold is worth 25% more than platinum. In Rolex platinum watches, you just get more of a cheaper metal (and pay multiple markups on it). http://www.kitco.com/market/

As its denser you will pay more for the same volume. No idea how much denser or whether it's 25% or not. Someone also pointed out that 95% is Platinum where's gold is 75%. Therefore a direct comparison is meaningless. In addition platinum is harder, will not scratch as easily or get dings which softer metals suffer from.

YG calls attention, just the way an exotic car does. Both are known to be more expensive than what the average Joe can afford. You have to be confident in the spotlight to pull it off. Otherwise, steel and WG are the way to go.

I bought my YG Day-Date in my early 30s. I wore it a lot when I first bought it, and definitely noticed more people eyeballing it compared to my SS DateJust. This never bothered me. For whatever reason, over time, I moved back to wearing my DateJust 95% of the time. A while back, I put the DD back into my rotation. Glad I did, it had become somewhat of a safe queen. It's a beautiful watch and enjoy wearing it.
