3185 or 3186: That is the Question

So, I'm considering an unsold GMT II Coke Reference 16710T.
Serial # Z642XXX.

I described the wiggle test to the AD jeweler over the telephone and he said that when he moves the hour hand clockwise, the minute hand does not move; but when he moves it counterclockwise, it does jiggle a little.

Then her performed the same test on his personal GMT-ceramic, and it performed identically.

So, what do you think? 3185 or 3186?

He won't take the back off of the Coke bc it's a "new" watch.

And the $ is almost full retail!

Hi Geepee, I'm not expert on this but I've heard only late Z series have the 3186 movt. I not sure if Z6 already have the new movt.

Some expert will answer it soon here!

That maybe to early a Z but you never know. The GMT hand is the one to watch while adjusting the hour hand forward and backwards, there is no movememt in the GMT hand with the 3186, very slight movement to the min. hand.

Perhaps the AD would remove the back of the case if you went there in person, agreed on the price, put the cash on the counter, and said you would buy it only if it had the 3186 movement.

If you want it and the price is right, get it.. They aren't making any more..

People are getting too wrapped up in a minor change to a very solid movement.....

Should be a 3185. Haven't seen a 3186 reported on a serial near that low.

and after are 3186 movements.
My Z7 is 3185.
Still about the same in terms of quality and accuracy.

I believe that an AD would sell the last remaining 16710 without or little discount because its not produced anymore, even Z series w/ 3185 if they still have it. I think same goes for sea-dweller

Passing the wiggle test means when you turn the hour hand, the 24-hour hand doesn't move. Don't observe the minute hand as it will jiggle...

FYI...

When you do the wiggle test... you are looking to see wether when you move the 12 hour hand the 24 hour hand wiggles or not... NOT the minute hand! The minute hand will move a bit which is normal same as the GMT C.

Hope this helps.

Could not agree more Larry they make a very minor change to the basic cal ebauche, then most everyone whoops and shouts its a new movement. But in reality its still almost 95% the same as first Cal introduced almost 20 years ago.And IMO no more accurate or longer lasting than the well proved 3185 which is based on the main Cal for most of Rolex watches the Cal 3035.

I would like to pick up a GMT II in the near future and I could care less if I get one with the 3185 or the 3186. All this hype over the 3186 is definitely contagious, I found myself thinking I wanted one for a couple of day's then it passed, I felt like I saw the light. The 3185 is a fantastic movement and the 3186 is not better to me, just a minor change. Stick dial, error dial, whatever, the Roman II looks better anyway. You will be very happy with both watches, don't pay extra for a 3186. Their was just a BNIB, M serial pepsi with 3186 that sold for $5000 on another forum, all the stickers were in place, just like at a AD. I look at that price and use it as a reference of what I should pay for one, I missed that one by the way. I would have bought it if it had the 3185 or the 3186 and been very happy. Good luck
