If you're a dentist or in any dental speciality, please read!

Sooo my question to you guys is...

Do you find it comfortable to wear your Rolex while working? Or do you find that it interferes with your work?

I'll be a first year dental student in the fall and this question was just on my mind because I just recently recieved a 116610 as a graduation gift.

though my dentist owns Rolexes & Breitlings, he does not wear them while working on patients.

his explanation...if they are knowledgeable about high-end wristwatches, some may think that he is overcharging them to accommodate his lifestyle.
it's another reason why he doesn't drive his Ferrari to the office.

Only one of the dentists at my the practice my girlfriend works at wears theirs, she wears a steel or white gold oyster perpetual, while working. The rest at the practice forego their watches while working.

My dentist has at least one Rolex maybe two. I don't completely remember. Not sure if I ever wore one there either. I know we have not talked about them for some reason. I don't mind him wearing it as long as it doesn't interfere.

As for the "Rolex factor" I give a pass when he has two walls full of customer files. He earned it.

My previous dentist worse an a SubC every time I saw him. So I assume it's comfortable enough for him to work with it on.

I would be more worried about your professors/ demonstrators than patients. Do you want to do a specialty? Getting along with your profs go a long way.

Just wear your watch and enjoy it.

When the time comes for you to decide about what patients think, you'll be in a better position to decide.

Personally, I don't begrudge a professional for having nice things.

There must be some guidelines about wearing jewelry in a dentistry setting.

I see my hygienist every four months, but only see the dentist occasionally, so I'm not sure whether he wears a watch or not.

I don't even know if my hygienist does. I'm too occupied to notice.

as long as the watch is not restricting your wrist's range of motion, then it should be fine to wear while working

most dentists I've visited have worn some kind of watch

Mine told me he doesn't like splashing patients' blood, saliva, gunk, plaque, etc on his watch. I can't blame him.

Congrats on a beautiful graduation present and also for getting into dental school!

I wear a watch while I work and it does not interfere with any of my procedures. It is comfortable. In fact, it feels strange the times I forget and leave the house without a watch on.

Good luck with first year. It can be tough on your time between didactic and labs.
Perhaps leave your watch at home on operative and fixed prosth lab days as prepping ivorine teeth can get pretty dusty in the lab.

Thank you! Very nervous for first year to start. Are you a periodontist?

Yes, I am a periodontist. I guess my username gave that away.

Are you thinking of specializing?

When do you start?

My dentist has a huge Breitling, it kept hitting my chin when he was doing dental work, I nicely asked him to take it off.

Of course everyone scolds you if you 'think' about specializing before school even starts but after shadowing all of the specialities I really would like to do periodontics or oral surgery.

We start classes August 15 and I'm attending West Virginia University.

Maybe some help from a fellow TRFer if I decide to do perio??

How do you like it?

After 24 years of private practice, I still enjoy it. It's a great profession.

Perio or OS you can't go wrong. Nothing wrong with wanting to specialize before school starts. It's good to have a goal. Just don't go around talking about it to all of your classmates! LOL

Feel free to PM if ever you need any help!

Have been in general practice since 82. In the mid 80s we transitioned to wearing gloves for every procedure, mostly due to the AIDS crisis. After that I decided I didn't like wearing a watch and getting glove debris all over them. Still wear them to the office every day and store them in the desk while operating. Congrats on dental school and good luck.

Why do I have to fill out the medical history and private info at the dentist if I've already done that a couple of years ago?

I'm at the dentist now for a cleaning. Yay not.

Mine wears a sub, I used to like him, until he pulled my wisdom teeth.

We actually know our patients pretty well so this annoying habit of filling out forms is not the case. Unfortunately, if your dentist has a lot of front desk turnover, this is probably the case.

Same two girls for years but when I first went here there was a different office manager.

On a side note I am a model of great dental health but he wants me to now invest in a water pic.

I won't fill out those forms again.
