Scored a killer deal on a Montblanc 149

Because I work at a jewelry store I get to see very fine and expensive pens almost every day. A close friend to my watchmaker brought in his MB 149 to give to him but my watchmaker didn't want it mainly because he has pens up to his ears, but offered to find a buyer for it. I overheard and asked how much would he sell it for and after a short pause he said, "$200."

However, I have a catch 22 though with the pen. It has his initials on the cap, BUT, he is a CIA agent. So it's not your average engraved pen. I initially thought about replacing the cap, which MB would do for $200. But I thought it was pretty cool to have a CIA agent's pen. He even text me a picture of his ID for validation purposes and I assume if I ever sell it I'll black out the personal stuff on it to the potential buyer. However, I don't think this will go anywhere!

So I got a sweet deal on the 149 for $200. The MB store confirmed its a 90-91 build based on the "W. Germany" on the clip and the two tone 18K nib.

Sorry for not getting all the ink off the nib.

Thank you. I was close to buying a cross fountain pen and even at our cost the one I wanted was almost as expensive as this 149. I figured I really don't have anything to lose.

You guys are killing me with this! Did you get the “Football” when you got this pen and what DEFcon are we at?

Seriously, this is a great pen. I enjoy mine immensely. You are about to learn what a truly great fountain pen journey is about!

No I was only handed a briefcase and a cellphone that rang exactly 5 minutes after we did the exchange.

I wrote in cursive for the first time in 20 years. Best feeling ever with this pen.

It is great to write with a FP. It makes your writing much mor deliberate and neat as it slows you down. Prevents me from chicken scratch as my wife calls my rollerball writing. Great pen, great story, great deal. Congrats.

That's sort of how I feel about it. I'm not sure I want them buffed out. It's sort of a nostalgic type of thing...

You are welcome as I enjoy seeing others learn about and use fountain pens on a regular basis…..

You are forewarned…..it's 'slippery slope' my friend…as once you start using your fountain pen there is no going back(and another person becomes addicted)!!!

With all the ink colors available you can change out your fountain pen with ease to suit your moods…..

Take care…..Leo

It's so funny you say that. Already bought another as my daily driver.... a Meisterstuck 144 FP in the Bordeaux flavor. The Burgundy is sharp! That one I'll carry around in my bag and use daily at work. The CIA 149 will stay at home on my work desk.

I'd like to find a quality stand and/or case for the one at my desk. I can't decide between vertical or horizontal. I'd like it to be a nice wood. I have a mahogany/walnut dark wood desk.

Also does anyone have an idea of where I could source the correct MB box for the 149? Or at least show me which box is correct?

I did. While at the airport yesterday I asked TSA if they could scan the pen because I'm worried about what's inside it.

P.S. I'm replying to this from jail!

Twist the pen twice counter-clockwise and clockwise three times. That will get you out of jail!

In all seriousness, I would think about running some lukewarm water through the pen to get any old dried ink out of the system. I would also think about putting the cap in a dish of lukewarm soapy water to get rid of any dried ink that may be in the cap. It is surprising what you sometimes find.

I do this with any used fountain pens and it seems to work out well.

Thanks for the info. I had actually done that after I bought it. Our store used to be a MB dealer but then they opened up a retail store in a local mall and we just couldn't compete.

I'll be doing the same thing when my 144 FP in bordeaux arrives!

A good, heated, gentle ultrasonic filled with warm soapy water works awesome for this.
