Help on 1002?

I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts on (1) authenticity; (2) how Franken this watch is; and (3) if authentic, potential value.

Seller says: "This is a late 1966 Oyster Perpetual with a NOS Explorer dial. Ref. Nr. 1002; Cal. 1570; serial--2076836"

All insights appreciated!

Surely a reworked dial. Take a look here at what a model 1002 should look like!

An automatic wouldnt say "precision" on the dial. Unless you are getting it for super super cheap as in under $1000 then i would keep walking. The "precision" mark would only be correct on a much older hand wind movement watch. End links look aftermarket too.

Some of the earliest Explorer references had Precision dials. The dial above is not one of those, though. And my 2005 Air-King has a Precision dial.

All 5500 Air Kings as well as 5500 Explorers were Precision or Super OPrecision and all were automatics.

So saying precision just means it isnt a certified movement?

Yes. Precision ans super precision were the non-chronometer movement, the 1520, either 17 or 23 jewels.

I might be wrong, but I thought the 17j movements only came with a blank dial, like my AK 5501 here.

Rolex made some blank dials, some with Precision and some with Precision and an underscore. I've never seen a Super Precision with the line, but they may have made them as well. I have a 23j AK with the blank dial and a 17j with Precision.
Rolex seemed to have very lax uniformity when it came to dials.

Help on 1002?

I'm having a hard time reading through the clutter here. Can someone with a solid knowledge base summarize the facts on this reference?

Por ejemplo: Did some 1002 early dials have "explorer" and "precision" (and/or "super precision")?

The 1002 was never an Explorer. It was an Oyster Perpetual. It didn't have Precision or Super Precision on the dial. It did have the Chronometer listing on the dial (Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified, or similar). The Explorers were the 5500 Explorer (not to be confused with the 5500 Air King), both in a the 34mm case, the 5504 Explorer with a 35mm case. Both of those had either precision or Super Precision on the dial. Then there was the 1016 Explorer in the 36mm case. The only Explorer with the Chronometer dial rating was the 1016.
Mind you these are the vintage models with the 15xx movements.

The first Explorer, the 6350, had the chrono dial. Also, I think some of the 6150 Explorers also had Precision on the dial.

Yes Expat. I wasn't listing the 10xx movement models nor the newer ones. Only the 15xx series. I have a sick affinity for the 34mm Rolex models.
