Thoughts on this Explorer II?

A friend from work decided he wants to buy a used Explorer II from "a guy he knows". I have unsuccessfully tried to point him to the forum and some of it's trusted sellers. I at least got him to send me a picture. I am too new to Rolexes to comment on authenticity, but was wondering if I could get some of your input.

I have my reservations about that piece.

I'm not an expert, however.

Thanks. I will point him to this thread. I wouldn't be comfortable, but on the other hand the consensus seems to be that it doesn't scream fake either.

It doesn't scream fake. That does not mean all components are authentic either one photo is not enough. Take pics of the hand stack, band markings and crown thanks

HS looks ok, but a couple things seem a little odd. May just be the lighting. More pics would be useful.

I don't have any more pics as I posted it for a friend. I pointed him to this thread so hopefully he will see it is probably not worth the risk. Perhaps he will join the forum and post more pics if truly insistent on going through with this purchase.

Notice how the minute markers are fully exposed around the upper edge but not around the lower edge. Looks like the dial has slipped.

Furthermore, I don't like the font in the date window or the band..but more pics are needed to make a complete judgement.

Now you mention it yes, i can't see how it could slip that much as the Swiss made looks relatively good positioning. The font in the date does look over prominent but could be the picture.

I know very little about authenticating Rolex, but the date font does seem a little thicker than what I've seen, and if the dial has slipped shouldn't the date be off center as well?

Great observation. That would explain the date window looking off to me. Although it looks too high not to low???

The dial slipping wouldn't have any affect on the date. Who knows what is going on with this explorer 2, something isnt correct though and that's enough to stay away from it

So the date wheel would slip along with the dial?
