Why so much Nautilus and Aquanaut love, little for the Calatrava?

Is the dress watch dead? Sports watches preferred? Is it the price point? All the posts here are about the Nautilus and Aquanaut. I prefer the Calatravas!

For me, Aqua and Nautilus more versatile and sporty. I hate wearing leather straps in the summer for obvious reasons and in the winter every building has the heat cranked on high so it's uncomfortable then as well. The tropical and steel along with the thinness and low profile is hard to beat for me as both daily wearers to the pool and the office.

It looks as if you own 3 great sport watches yourself by looking under your watch heading below your trf name so you understand the role sport watches play in a collection and the versatility they offer. In general I think more people prefer a bracelet because it can be worn in casual or dressy situations. Some of the Calatravas although beautiful do not always work as well with casual attire. Just my 2cents! The 5227 is a great reference but it is not cheap either and it seems most members have started Patek collections with a Naut or Aqua then dive into the complications or classic calatravas.

No, dress watches are live and kicking. Can't beat a dress watch with leather strap for an evening out at a top restaurant.

This is "The Rolex Forum" and there are many Rolex lovers here, who naturally gravitate towards sports watches. There are other online watch forums with more discussions on dress watches.

I like dress watches and have many more Patek watches in leather straps than metal bracelets or rubber straps. I try to appreciate each watch for its special characteristics. If you do a search here, there are a number of threads on Calatravas.

I love the Calatrava line. My grandfather wore one when I was a youngster, and his watch got me into the hobby. I feel, for myself, the watch is a little too delicate for my current lifestyle. Simple and timeless; perfection.

Dress watch are not dead. Just that sports watch are more popular. Sports watches can be used and still looks good in a dressy situation most of time. The other way is not always true with dressy watch on casual clothes.

I wore my 5296 to the office on Friday with a sport coat, jeans, white oxford and a nice pair of loafers. Looked fine to me.

I would not wear the watch with shorts however.....

Not dead at all.. I rally like the 5196 and likely to pick one up when the time is right. I wear the 5711 and Rolex a lot but I do have times where I want a nice dress watch.

My dress watch but I wear it casually, matte finish strap should make it more casual.

My favorite watch that I wear almost every day with jeans and a polo shirt. It's too big, too thick, & too heavy, and that's why I like it so much.

Easy to say when you have a 5131, which is a miracle when it's your first from AD, while us poor mortals need to get on a list for much simpler watches and often without hope, you should be ashamed Just kidding, I think it's great that you got it, means that there always is hope and Patek is not totally stuck on old principles, of course in Paris salon it would have been impossible, a member here with great Pateks, 5575, 5711p, and other grail pieces, when I was with him for a drink and see watch shops, didn't even want to go in while we were 100 meters from it, we went to other shops, gives you an idea of the Salon...

About dress watches no they're not dead, many guys here have one, but this is TRF and more sport related, and others like me wear only sport watches..

I wear a suit 5 days a week and there is something unassuming, understated and discretely elegant in being able to choose a beautiful dress watch to complement your wardrobe. And perfectly happy to leave my sports watches for weekends and casual. However, I do think the calatrava were abut small at one stage. I think the 6000 is ok but I like a 39 mm

A dress watch really doesn't fit my lifestyle. Not unrelated, I'd probably go instead for a Reverso, which, has elegance and history, at a fraction of the price.

My favorite Calatrava for dress occasions. If I dressed up more, I would have this one.

Don't worry I waited 43 years to get a Patek, but to be honest I didn't even give it a thought before coming here, was quite happy wearing my sub c all day every day, why oh why did I come here, I wouldn't have became a watch nut without TRF as my friends couldn't care less about watches, ignorance is bliss

Elliott, is there one very coveted Patek you DON'T have??? Because having 5131, 5004, 5711p, 5970p and God only knows what else, seems to me you have them all except maybe minute repeaters, or maybe you also have some of those as well

At least for me I can wear a sports watch 355 days out of the year. Versus 10 days out of the year when I attend formal and semi formal events. Even at that I'll still be tempted to wear a sports watch to the latter events.

Heck, I'd wear this thing combined with an old t-shirt and my levi's jeans & trucker jacket. And I'm sure it would look great.

You know, I'm surrounded by PM Rolex, vintage Rolex, regular sports models, Omega and quite a lot of PP every day from 9-5. the Rolex and stuff (except for vintage) doesn't do much for me, but the Pateks
I know it's quite normal for a 22yo not to be able to afford a 25k+ watch, but damn it's so annoying when you see all these nice things every day and all I have is a 3k Cartier and a vintage Omega...

There will always be a place for the Calatrava..........Period.
Its classic shape has remained in the fold waaaaay before the "sport" models came along. And I have no doubt will still be here in years if not decades to come.
There is place in every serious collector for both dress and sport models

I do love both sports and dress watches and I have a nice group of both! I am aiming at a Patek 5296r, but when I come to this site it is 24/7 Nautilus and Aquanaut. I appreciate both of those watches, especially the Nautilus with complications (out of my price range), but I think of dress watches when I think Patek, just as I think sports watch when I think Rolex. I am glad that this thread drew some great watch porn!
