Hey folks,

I just wanted to let you know that the new issue of DIVER magazine has not only a great ad for the new all gold Sub but also an article I co-wrote about diving 16,000 feet deep to explore the world's deepest wooden shipwreck. There are gratuitous shots of me and my original Sub holding Spanish pieces of eight and various other artifacts.

My co-author is Don Walsh, the pilot of the bathyscaph Trieste, and one of the expedition leaders was Anatoly Sagalevitch, one of the Jurors for the Rolex Awards for Enterprise.

DIVER magazine is primarily distributed in Canada, although it does make it down to the States. If any of my northern brethren can pick up some extra copies for me, I would certainly appreciate it. I received a measly TWO copies from the publisher for my efforts.

The story of how this article came to be in DIVER is an interesting one.

Don Walsh and I have collaborated on projects for the past decade, and I was honored to participate in this expedition with him. We initially wrote an article about the expedition for Naval History, which I believe was published in 2002. I also did a speaking tour of the U.S. to talk about the expedition, with stops in Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Boston.

Then, Don and I revised the article for The Explorers Journal in 2004, and we included new information from post-expedition research. Phil Nuytten, the owner of DIVER magazine, saw both articles and loved them. He has been bugging Don and I to update the article for DIVER for some time now, and we ultimately did so last spring. The magazine devoted a lot of pages to the article, and the editor included a lot of photos. Don and I were surprised by this. We thought for sure the editor would trim it down, but he didn't.

Lately, I have been getting more and more requests to speak about the expedition. Frankly, it's more fun to talk about than Titanic because the expedition was perfect and the find was so historically significant. We also set a lot of records -- deepest wooden shipwreck, fourth deepest wreck ever discovered, deepest arcaheological recovery, first use of digital mapping, deepest use of HDTV, etc., etc.

It also doesn't hurt that one of the members of the expedition was Richard Garriott, the son of astronaut Owen Garriott and the next private astronaut to visit the International Space Station, and another was Mike McDowell, who has gotten a lot of press lately for helping the Russians plant their flag at the North Pole last summer. Mike also planted the Australian flag at the North Pole, and this flag was actually on the Pole -- unlike the Russian flag, which was actually planted several meters away -- but nobody ever mentions this.

I have heard that the documentary we filmed during the expedition for British television was well received in the U.K. and Europe, and that it was broadcast in North America, but I have not seen it.

Anyway, I can post a link to the article on my site as soon as DIVER publishes its next issue. I will update this thread when I do.

I don't think that's the new sub. It looks like the old 18ct version to me.

I agree. Now that the SD I wore on my last deep dive is MIA, I need another one.

Plus, I have actually been past the depth rating on the DSSD, albeit in a submersible, but even that feat is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon. (Note the depth guage on the upper left: 4,913 meters = 16,118.76 feet.)

I'll bet the survial manual didn't cover any of the possible "worst cases" at that depth. Would have been cool to have had a DSSD stapped on the outside just to see how it faired.
