Between a boat and a skydweller, you can have one. What do?

If boats aren't your fancy, fill in the blank of something you love in the price range, tell us why you'd choose what you choose.

I'm in the market for a new Harley, thinking about putting it off for a few -years- to play the SKydweller game

Just want to add that my friends think I'm crazy, but the enjoyment a watch brings to me rivals anything else I might buy

For me, cars win every time.

No question.

Even in the skydweller price range?

I'm not sure what kind of cars you have in your stable, but what cars in the 40-50k are fun enough to drive?

Not being snarky, just curious. Isn't that price range pretty bleak for fun cars?

Boat. Every time.

The Skydweller is the probably smarter buy from a cost perspective in the long run. But, you can't invite your friends for a weekend of fun on your Skydweller.

I dunno, I'd definitely invite my friends over for a weekend of looking at my SD, I doubt any would show, though!

Great point, though!

Well, a skydweller isn't a hole in the water you through money into...

For me I would stick with watches or spend the money traveling.

I enjoy vehicles -- but am more of an A to B guy when it comes to them. They just have to be fun.

How about the new M2 --- it's in the ball park of $50k...

Just my .02

Cheers!!

For me a watch is not a lifestyle thing, it is an accessory. Chasing a watch over a car/boat/bike makes no sense to me. I can't drive it and go places with it, I can't take a few friends around lake on it, and I can't ride it. If the money can give you loads of activities over a watch - go for the activities.

Experiences bring happiness not material objects

I love the water and was brought up on it, I've been boating since I was 8. So to me a boat > rolex. At around 40k you have about four directions to go in.

1) New/Used Sail Boat -- you could get an amazing used sail boat. I would think a very nice 30-40' used if you buy right that's ready to sail. This would be ideal if you want to travel long distances, race, or sail in open waters. A 35' sailboat would be capable of sailing to different countries and islands. One design racing is fun and challenging, it would also give you a reason to use the ym ii.

2) Very nice run-about. 20-25' Boston Whaler that will work well and be able to hit about 40-55 knots. I would choose this if you have a dock or house on the water. Not great in open waters or rough weather.

3) Small Entry level cruiser or larger used cruiser. This is a nice option if you want to camp on your boat or entertain. For example watch the fireworks in baltimore or DC on your boat. You would want something bigger than 40' for open rough water and weather unless you had a fishing boat with a displacement hull. I would guess 40k buys you 20-26ft new and maybe 30 feet used.

4) Toys -- Jet Boats, Jet Skiis and small sailing cats. Lots of fun. Basically jet skiis are super fun, and last I checked you can find some that get up there in speed.

I bought a 2009 manual shift M3 for a lot less than 40-50k and have a ball with it. Flipped a Patek so I didn't have to hit savings and get yelled at by my wife....which happened anyway since she doesn't like having a 3rd car in the way. Apparently garages are meant for storage of crap, not cars

As for whether I'd go with the watch or the bike, I'd say go with the bike particularly if it's your one an only. Enjoy it and save up for the watch later.

Can always go with the watch and flip it to pay for the bike down the road....but lose out on the riding.

For the OP's neck of the woods, I would add an entry level Ranger bass boat, a top of the line aluminum bass boat, or a 20 foot ski boat.

What's funny is I have been thinking about a 2 seater for the wife and I. Just yesterday I was thinking if it came down to having to choose between one or the other (watch or car) I just don't know what I would do. But I'm not in the market for a new timepiece but if the wife said choose one PP 5036J my grail watch which is around 30k give or take. Or a sports car it would be hard for me. The Patek just might win. But who knows now I am just daydreaming Lol!

I love watches, but I agree they are an accessory to a lifestyle. I have a 2012 Harley Electra glide classic that I will be taking from Orlando to St. Louis then back through Tennessee next week. My hulk should be accompanying me but it is unfortunately at RSC. I would never give up my bike for a new watch, but if watches make you half as happy as my bike does then get that sky dweller!

Buy the watch. You can enjoy it every day. Not so much with a boat or motorcycle. I'm a die hard motorcycle guy too. Some of my best memories and friends are from motorcycles. Not to mention great family times.

I sold my motorcycle in April. Words cannot describe how much I loved that thing. I had a lot adventures on it. When I got the bike I only had 1 kid. Now I have 3 and could never find time to enjoy it. Last year I only put -~1000 miles on it but it depreciated over $2k and I paid $500 in tag and ins.

With the $ from the bike I talked my wife into letting get my first Rolex. I wear it and enjoy it every day. It's a much less thrilling experience but it's not all that thrilling to have a bike sitting in a garage.

Then you factor the risk of me dying or being seriously injured wearing a nice watch is much lower. I'm no speed demon but accidents happen to fathers or 3 all the time. I've had enough close calls to know it can happen and it's not always your fault.

Personally I decided that it makes more sense to own a watch but rent a bike. I can rent to exact same bike as mine for $1000-$1500 a week.

You may be in a. Very different situation. If you know you will be able to enjoy it then there's no better way to travel.

About boats of any size and kind, It's not the initial expense that breaks you, but the upkeep.
Not to mention resale prices.
Get that watch!

watches are fun and all but don't come close to this...

and this is were my money goes before ANYTHING...the thrill of a race car (ah, maybe a boat?) cant be rivaled by a mere watch!

For 30K I would get the watch. Never been a huge boat guy and like many of said upkeep will turn a 30K boat to a 40K boat in a few years.

Now for 60-70K I'd look into getting a Jaguar F-type :). It all comes down to personal preference I get much more enjoyment out of cars and watches than boats.

I'm not into watches that cost that much personally. I'd get the boat, but remember what it means. Bust Out Another Thousand.... Boats can be serious money pits but a blast to have.

I'd think about how many times you're going to "actually" use the boat in a year, vs upkeep, maintenance, etc... vs actual enjoyment. If you're going to use it often, and make great memories, go for it! If "actual" usage is going to be minimal, I wouldn't. Same goes for anything you'd fill in the blank with.....you already know the enjoyment you'll get out of the beautiful watch :)

Good answer, Neil.

In all seriousness, it's all about priorities...not necessarily which one you can have...but which one you get first.

Personally i would probably buy the watch as watches are probably one of my biggest passions. But many people are right on here. Its an accessory. Might spend it on something you can enjoy in a different way than a watch.

If i was in this predicament i might go this route. Personally i'm not a boat kind of guy. If i had 35K to spend on a toy i would probably start a muscle car project. Something i can have for a very long time. Something i can enjoy with others and something if i build it slow and from the bottom up not only will i enjoy the project aspect of it but after enjoy the finish product.
