Need help from TRF! Milgauss vs ExplorerI
Hello TRF
I have a Z-Blue Milgauss which is a little less than a year old. I really like it, but I might like the new 39mm Explorer I even more. I am not sure... Milgauss: Pros:
Cons:
Explorer Pros:
Cons:
So what to do? Should I flip my beloved Milgauss for the new Explorer I (granted that it is available in Denmark in 2016)? I badly need some input as to you would do Thanks in advance! |

Your Milgauss should have around 48 hours PR, not 36.

Get the Explorer. Your only listed "con" is that it's frequently seen in the wild.
First of all, I've never seen one on anyone else besides me and, second of all, who cares how many other people have one? Would that stop you from getting the phone or car or whatever else you really want? Get it, wear it, and enjoy it! |

My first Rolex was a white Milgauss and I flipped it pretty quick for an Explorer. I loved the Milgauss, but it didn't seem to go with many outfits. Conversely, the Explorer works with everything. The Z-blue is a stunner, but I would think it probably doesn't quite work in every situation.

The Explorers beauty is a bit understated, it flies under the radar, which suits me personally. Are you sure it's what you are after? After all, you choose a Milgauss Z-Blue before, which is a bit more...outgoing. Are you sure you will not miss the vivid colors?
I could see how owning both would work for me :) |

I like the Milgauss better---I personally love the heft of mine, despite its being only 40mm. I also find the Explorer to be a tad too small. If it came in a 41mm, it might be a different story.....but I think the lightening-bolt secondhand of the Milgauss and the dial make it a more unique watch than the Explorer. But you should go for whatever you think suits you best!

From personal experience, I can say that you need to have both.

I really care for both.
I just wonder how long/many Milgauss will be around. Lots more ExpI out there. |

You need to sell the Milgauss and go buy a Submariner. You're messing around in the minor leagues with niche watches most of us get years down the line, time to step up and get what you know you're destined for.

curious as to what the model line hierarchy is when it comes to procuring Rolexes...if there even is such a thing.

I'm not a huge Z-blue fan, so I'd flip, sure, but I'd never flip a GV for an Explorer (but I would add an Explorer if I really loved it that much).

The shock absorption of the Explorer is far more useful than the anti magnetic ability of the Milgauss. Then there's that lightning bolt second hand... ugh.

The more you can keep and not flip - the less regrets you will have!

2. Datejust 3. Something avant-garde 4. Something vintage The first Rolex you buy is the Submariner as it's the perfect blend of Sport and Dress, it's the perfect blend of large/small case sizes, it's the perfect blend of tool/bling, frankly it's the perfect Rolex. You're in your 30's, you're sporty and active, your career is doing well, you treat yourself to the icon. The second Rolex you buy is specifically for Dress occasions, weddings, funerals, awards dinners, golf then dinner at the club, and that's a Datejust, Jubilee instead of Oyster, usually with a contrasting dial to the Sub you already own, usually white or grey. You're in your 40's now, a few kids, you're maturing. The third Rolex you buy is something weird just to feel different than everyone else to show off in discussion forums, whatever the hot new strange Rolex is coming out of Basel. Once it was the Green Sub, then came the Turn-O-Graph, then the Milgauss, then it was the BLNR, now it's the quirky Air King. This is the watch you flame out on, get bored of, flip and regret. Midlife crisis time, 50's aren't fun at first, you do a lot of strange things this decade. The fourth Rolex you buy is something vintage because by now you've owned Rolexes for a decade or more and you've learned a bit and you appreciate the history of the older models. A 5513 or 1016 easily come to mind, remind you of simpler times when you were younger. Late 50's early 60's, it's the watch you get when you take Rolex for granted and pick the hobby back up now that you're financially stable. That's how it works. |

I'd never buy a Milgauss, but if I had one I'd never sell it.

Dear Speedolex,
I loved your chronology of Rolex ownership. Mine was Datejust. Daydate (traded Datejust), Datejust, and Blue/Black GMT. I'm considering adding a Submariner with the ceramic bezel. This sequence started about 30 years ago and there were a few Pateks scattered in the years. |

My opinion is keep the Milgauss. I think it's a bit more unique with its beautiful blue crystal.

Thanks Quail, it's an enjoyable read (and I think it's mostly true for all of us how the buying patterns work). It's high time you got your first Submariner, but it's also time you consider vintage. You may want to look at the prior generation Subs as they have smaller cases and the oversized watch fad is dying out. Buy a 1999 or 2002 16610 (mine above) and in 10 years it'll be both vintage and in high demand as everyone eschews their maxi-case giants and seeks something more tasteful. Trust me on this one. |

I would not sell my Milgauss for an Explorer, ever.
