Doing the Math - to Fund my Grail

Patek 5270R-001 - approximately 130k

Sell 5980 - get approximately 40k - 90k shortfall
Sell a couple of APs - get approximately 30k - now only a 60k shortfall

Sell my extra car- get 25k - now only a 35k shortfall
Sell my kidney - get 15k - now only a 20k shortfall

Deliver pizzas on the weekend for 6 months- get 5k - no only a 15k shortfall
Tell wife to do bake sales- get 1500 bucks - now only a 13.5k shortfall
Put the kids on a street corner to sell lemonade- get 500 bucks - now only a 13k shortfall

Dont eat out for 2 months- save 5k - now only an 8k shortfall
Recycle toilet paper for 6 months - save 250 bucks - 7750 shortfall

Skip next vacation - save 5k $2250 shortfall
Walk to work- no gas for 6 months - save $2000. now only $250 shortfall

Can I borrow $250 bucks from anyone?

If you sold wife and children's kidneys you can keep the car

Just negotiate $250 off the price of the watch and you're there...

Don't have to.. 5980 is a great look, amazing comfort and certainly more versatile then 5270. .. Jen

Plan a 20K vacation, then skip it - now you can stop after selling your kidney.

Thats a fantastic idea. And because I now have the perpetual watch, I can time when I need to take them all in for dialysis.

even better idea. Maybe if they give me $500 off the watch, I don't need to recycle toilet paper.

If I did a 40k vacation, then might be even better. Great suggestion.

Just stop eating out so much, you are wasting crazy money that way, and please don't tell me you are ordering wine, the biggest con since bankers and their sub-prime packaging, and you'll need a new heart, never mind your kidneys.

But seriously stop eating out.

To me, eating out (and ordering good wine) are one of the great pleasures in life.

Yeah me too, I have a penchant for 2 and 3 Michelin stars and am happy to say that Michel Roux and his brigade now recognise me and mine in Le Gavroche, it's my Cheers, but if I was trying to save some serious money then this would be my route, much better than delivering pizzas for 6 months.

Neil, I did strike me as odd that I would be disagreeing with you!

I was just playing devil's advocate. Fine dining, at a few hundred pounds a head, gets me into similar arguments and gasps as spending on Rolexes etc with many normal and sane people who think our spending patterns are crazy, so I know there are ways for us to save money if we really have to. I like the idea of cutting back on one luxury to buy another, makes me feel like I've earned it in a way. It is also why I don't buy on impulse and try to wait at least 3 months before buying a watch.

Hi Neil - it's your money and you have earned it so spend as you wish, nobody should be in the position to tell you how except the missus and kids

I think I am done for a long while, saving for property in and around London is not going to be helped by splashing out on fine horology

LOOOOL great thread, and some great answers too, ok you don't even need to sell any of your kidneys or your family's kidneys, go to China, Moldavia, and a few other countries, find very poor people willing to sell your their kidneys for a few thousand, back home find a surgeon who is willing to take part, special ultra fast courrier between both countries, and in no time you'll have your grail, of course when the FBI, Interpol or I don't know who else comes for you, just don't tell them you got the idea from me...

Dude....forget the recycling of toilet paper. Just pilfer it from your local gas station restrooms.

While you're at it just bring along a couple of empty bottles and fill it up with water from the sink and save on your water bill and increase your margins on the lemonade stand.

Dude you are total undervaluing a a kidney. A good kidney can go for over 200K each... A 1/2 liver can go for 100K+ as long as long as its in good shape.

Funny, exactly the contrary of mine, I'm the one who before wanted only to buy flats, don't like houses, too many renovations needed proportionally to a flat, and she's the one who wants to spend on luxury things, now we're negotiating for a mink coat, yeah I know, not cool for these poor little guys, but when you're living in Russia or Ukraine, you better have one when you get minus 20-30 degrees celsius, had minus 43 in Riga, don't know how much that is in fahrenheit but a lot, without her I would never have even bought a sub C, I was like "it's 8K, sure I love it but it's not reasonable, better to invest", and then I found TRF, and now I'm like "8K for a watch? That's nothing"
