The Heat....

a huge heat dome is on top of most of us here in the USA. Wherever you are, be safe, stay hydrated if outside..

94 degrees and 92 percent humidity here in New Orleans area at 5:30 pm

Our Arizona friends will most likely win this thread, but where are you and what are your high temps?

Supposed to be low 80s here in San Juan (south OC) this weekend. I'm just happy we finally broke through May Gray and June Gloom. It's been thick this year.

The heat index is already 105 here, at 4 am. Forecast for today is 108 with a heat index at 122. Fairly mild compared to last year, but definitely linen suit kind of weather.

I'm close to drowning the next person who says it's a dry heat. 120 is just plain stupid.

Wow, wow, wow. It's forecast to get to 60 tomorrow here in Seattle with what we call liquid sunshine. It was snowing in the mountains yesterday... :(

Do I win?

I am going for my usual hike in the mountains this weekend, question was should I go Saturday or Sunday? Last week, the HIGH at the the mountain I hike on was 72 degrees, (about 5,000 feet up). Tomorrow, it's supposed to be 83, quite a bit warmer but still not too bad. SUNDAY, the projected temp...even that high... Is 100!!!!!!!!

Don't look for me tomorrow, I will be hiking in the mountains before the heat wave hits.

You may tolerate it but you don't get use to 110 or higher. The car is 160 inside, the pool is over 90 degrees, the house air conditioner is running non stop, the kool decking around the pool burns your feet. I'm pretty much sick of it after 40 years

The car never cools down unless your on the highway for an hour, forget about doing 30 minute driving chores for the wife, you sweat the whole time even when the car has stayed in the garage. There's no breeze to speak of and if there is it's like a convection oven.

Even the little bug critters stay under a rock until the sun goes down

You can get used to it, but you have to be outside all the time. It's being acclimated to an air conditioned space that makes it intolerable.

When I worked in Iraq in 2005 there was a heat dome in my region that raised the daytime temperatures into the low 140's (in the shade). I was outside all the time and was acclimated. It dropped into low 100's at night and it felt cool to me.

If you spend most of your days inside, do be careful in this hot weather. You dehydrate very quickly in the hot dry air, usually without noticing because there isn't an accumulation of sweat on the skin. Heat stress is always just a few minutes away if you're not drinking plenty of water. Keep a few liters of water in your car if you'll be travelling out of the city.

Excellent advice

On the rare occasions that I spend any time at home, I don't run my A/C unless it's at night in the bedroom at bedtime. I can't say that I've acclimatised but I do suffer marginally less than some of my colleagues and fellow ex-pats.

As for keeping hydrated, the school of thought is that if you don't need a pee then you need a drink

I'm only in the UK for about one month of the year, which includes two weekends in Wales. The rest of the time in the UK is in the Sarf East. It's much easier for Mrs Van D to come out here once a month than it is for me to keep tripping back and forth.

Out here, I do travel a fair bit around Asia but the heat doesn't change much unless I head north of HK. Humidity drops though, which is a relief

The drink/pee thing is an interesting balance.
I have had long discussions with my GP about this. He works in air con all day but tells me he drinks 3 litres of water a day - which I think is a huge amount.
I only use the A/C to sleep in summer and only then when the temperature is oppressive.
Where I live you spend most of the year in shorts & T shirt.
In summer I drink 2 litres of water a day and now (winter) about 1 1/2 litres.
You know you are drinking more than you need when you are off to the loo every hour.
Having said that however, I do believe that I function better on slightly more rather than slightly less water.

Most people go through life under hydrated without knowing it. Your GP is right in his consumption. I drink about 2.5 to 3 liters a day year round. When working actively outside in hot weather (>95 F) I drink about 500mL an hour. Above 115 F I drink a liter an hour and go on a work rest cycle to keep my core temperature healthy. Above 130 F it's a liter every 30 minutes. I also add a water enhancer to the water to avoid washing out electrolytes (MiO Fit is great).

I have a weather gauge of sorts for hydration - my contact lenses start bothering me when I'm not drinking enough water (dry eyes). I feel that discomfort long before I experience any heat stress symptoms, and it cue's me to hydrate.

As long as we're talking about the heat, I am going to take this opportunity to pat myself on the back I live in San Diego near the beach so do not suffer the heat a lot of you are, I rarely run my central AC, but it DOES get hot here in the summer. I came up with a resolution that keeps my whole place a bit cooler, especially at night. The pic below is the access to my attic. I replaced the "door" (basically a plank of wood) with a screen. Then I put in a high-end attic fan which vents to the outside, and wired it a regular switch in my bedroom. I leave a window open, and at night, the fan sucks the hot air out, and the cool(er) air in to my whole condo. It works great, doesn't use as much energy as AC, and let's me sleep like a baby

Highly recommend this for anyone that can do this, it really works!
