The Watch of a Honk Kong Billionaire

What kind of watch do you think the richest man in Hong Kong wears? Supposedly with a business net worth of 80 billion?

See below:

I would feel really weird wearing my gold rolex near a billionaire. Or any expensive watch for that matter. I would not feel good about myself.

Interesting story. He seems like a very practical person, saying if he were to wear a $100K watch, he would be worried about it.

Just give $50 billion to charity and buy a nice watch. This is a crap deal for everyone.

Probably why she noticed his watch to begin with. Obviously that was an excerpt from a longer interview and she wasn't sent there to interview him about his watch.

To each his own. People are funny, some I know spend like crazy in certain things and are extremely frugal when it comes to other stuff. In this guy's case, short of some blinged out monstrosity there really aren't many timepieces that can separate the billionaires from the lowly multi-millionaires, so why bother?

Wonder how much his suit cost.

Watching or reading interviews like this puts a lot of things into perspective. I love watches but sometimes it feels like I spend too much time reading about it.

I refuse to invest in expensive socks. I buy 15 or so of the same cheap black socks then throw them away when Ive lost or worn them out.

I try to get my money's worth out of socks to, LOL. In my case, I may spend money on a pair to wear for a specific occasion or with a certain suit - but I always buy two pair, never one. That way when I've worn a whole in one sock of each pair, I can put the two remaining good socks together to make a third pair! Three pairs for the price of two.

Smart choice for a smart man. When you've got that kind of money, there's no need to show off; just wear what works.

I think so too. It would be wiser to try and become a billionaire instead of fooling around here.

My wife yells at me when she sees me wearing a sock with a hole in it. I'm fact she has asked how I'll spend xxx on a watch but wear socks with holes. There's the I in WIS for ya!

this stuff is a complete fabrication.. his public relations team put it together as a fluff piece so people think what a great down to earth guy he supposedly is. I mean, seriously, why would you let a reporter write an article about it if you genuinely didn't have an angle to play.

Reminds me a lot of this article here, under the 'who in banking wears a swatch' section

"A Swatch used to be a cool way of saying "I don't take myself very seriously."

Then Lloyd Blankfein started wearing one.

Now, Swatches are for people who want other people to think they are unpretentious and confident. That's as pretentious as the guys in the Hamptons driving old Wagoneers with a collection of boarding school and college lacrosse stickers on the back."

Perhaps, if I hadn't spent so much money on buying and selling watches, usually at a loss, I may have been the next billionaire..............Not!

Incidentally, as a Fathers Day present a couple of years ago, I was given 7 pairs of socks, each with a different day of the week on them. So now I have no issue knowing which day it is

Warren Buffet is another billionaire known for frugality, but Mr. Buffet also appreciates value when he finds it. He wears a Rolex.

I purchased my Rolex (Stainless steel, Oyster Perpetual, Date, Chronometer) in 1973 for US$230 when I 18 years old. Forty-three years later, it still accurate, rugged and gets daily use. If Li Kai-shing had purchased a similar Rolex when he was 18 years old, it would probably retail for under US$100.

Mr. Li is playing the ‘reverse-face’ card. As another poster, (Dewitte), observed, this is:

“a fluff piece so people think what a great down to earth guy he supposedly is…”

Even at his age, Mr. Li is still playing games.

Not surprised in the least. He's a buy for value and hold kind of guy. That first pic made me chuckle. I don't care where it was taken, it struck me funny that he is wearing a name tag.

I like that guy, I would bet he is self-made. He is very practical, assured, modest, unapologetic, confident....and happy! No wonder he made billions.

Very refreshing to see someone like him in media.
