Noob question
I'm still shopping at ADs to find my first Rolex. I'd appreciate it if anyone could answer my questions:
1. What do the letters ("Z", "M", etc.) mean in serial numbers? I heard it represented the time when the watch was made. If that's true, could anyone please tell me which time period each letter represents? 2. I feel embarrassed asking this, but where do you find the serial number on the watch? Thanks for any help. |

This will give you an overview of the significance of the letter in the serial number:
http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=8478 The serial number is located between the lugs at 6 o'clock. You have to remove the bracelet to view it.

the serial number on a late "Z" or current "M" will have the serial number inscribed inside the chapter ring around the dial. (on most models)

I always forget that one. I tend to live in the past.

Newbie as well - my two cents
Hello all!
New here as well and hope to bring myself "up to snuff" knowledge wise. Own numerous Rolex Watches but my knowledge factor is not what it should be. Just my bit of newly acquired knowledge for my fellow newbie: Accepted delivery recently for my Milgauss (Black Dial, Orange appointments). In addition to the new location of the serial number I learned from the AD about the new lasered security measure. The marking is on the side of the case at the 9:00 position. |

The AD is mis-informed. The marking at the 9 o'clock is simply a inventory control tag# and is easily discarded by taking off the plastic film on the side of the case that is used for protection when new. |

check the laser etched crown (LEC) at 6 o'clock. have a bright flashlight shining light parallel to the crystal from the 6 o'clock position toward the 12
