Icon5 Which should be my first Nautilus

I'm looking at acquiring my first Nautilus and have a few options to choose from. I would love to choose the 5711, but sadly the waiting list is very long with my AD. And my urge and impatience to acquire one is big.....

So I want to choose from these models.

5711G - white gold, grey dial, leather strap - discontinued
5980AR - the bicolor, blue dial chrono - current
5726A-001 - annual calender - black dial - leather strap
5980/1A-001 - annual calender bracelet - discontinued

Thanks for your insights and comments !

I take it the last one is a 5726/1A-001 which is the annual calendar with bracelet. The 5980 is the chronograph.

With that said, I would probably go with the 5726 with bracelet. The two tone 5980 is nice, I like the Royal blue dial and the size, but I prefer the SS version or the full RG version of the 5980.

TBH if I were you I would look for a SS version 5711, 5712 or 5980 in the grey market, the blue dial is just so sexy! The 5711 G is nice but the grey dial by itself just doesn't do it for me and same goes for the 5726 on a strap... SS on strap? No thanks.

From your choices I voted for the 5980!

However, any of the Nautilus watches are quite easily available in the grey market as well as second hand dealers!

Good luck with your choice... All great choices!

More likely the OP meant to write “chronograph” instead – since the 5980 in steel has been discontinued.

Of ones you mentioned only 1 appeals to me the 5980/1a so for me don't care for any of the others. As for first Nautilus I'd recommend 5711 blue dial a SS classic Patek! To each his own though and go with your gut.

Can the 5980 go in the pool? Can you actuate the chronograph in the water?

I saw a thread about this on another forum (watchpro)... the person was in the pool and mentioned that he tested the Chrono in the pool! So it's suppose to work!

But to be honest my 5980 has never even seen a bath tub leave alone the pool

Are there 2 steel versions, one with a blue dial and one with a grey dial?

And most people seem to like the blue more, although both are stunning IMHO

Of course it can go in water – it’s WR to 120m.
Why would you want to operate the chronograph underwater?
Someone did on theirs, but no deeper than 1.5m, which may’ve saved them from an expensive repair bill.
At some point well before 120m depth, the pushers' seals won’t prevent water from getting past.
If you want to operate a chronograph in deep water, buy one that’s specifically been engineered to do so – namely the Blancpain FF version.

I was just curious what patek's guidance was for using the chronograph in the water.

Wait for the 5711 blue. Otherwise, I'd vote 5980

If the 5711/1a is the one you really want, then get that even if it means waiting. You might need to look outside Belgium, but persistence will pay off.

If you can't wait I'd go for the 5980/1a.

You mention this will be your first Nautilus, but will it be your first Patek? If you already own other Pateks, then recommending a first Nautilus would be easier knowing your interests and likes.

I would recommend the 5726/1A or the 5980/1A. The 5980 is thicker than the 5726 so I would make sure it is to your liking. I would not purchase a precious metal or two tone as your first Nautilus, but that is just my opinion/advice. Between the AC and chrono, it is about personal preference and fit on your wrist.

I'm with Ken. 5711 for me. But out of your choices, the 5980 will do

Controversial -
Buy a rolex, AP, or blancpain ff for the water/beach/sport life and a calatrava or complicated pp for everything else.

Picked the two tone, just like it! Neat in the metal, beautiful dial.

Wait for the 5711 or consider a 5712 SS

I don't care what the oem says, I wouldn't dare use the pushers underwater. Those ratings are all static tests. Lots of info on that. Watch heart recently did a vid talking about just that.

Either 5711/5712 get ultra thin with blue dial, and if your AD can't just get in the grey market or from another AD, forget Europe but many other countries have them from time to time, we saw many members get lucky here, the 5711/5712 are really what a Nautilus is all about, in third place I like the 5726, but a blue dial ultra thin is really something

I tried it on a few days ago, a stunning piece, but knowing me I'm not sure whether I will like it for long. The nautilus I want to buy should be a keeper for me.

My AD put me on the list with a bit of priority so the 5711 will happen in the future. Don't know when...but it will.

The 5980 blue dial is discreet , sporty, elegant and beautiful in its details but nobody will chop of my hand, the 5980AR is stunning, the crisp and bright blue dial with the contrast of the gold, WOW, but but but...will I like this watch forever, is it not to flashy........???

The 5711G is also beautiful, dressy with the strap, great with a suit. Simplicity is the ultimate complication is this case.

To be continued......
