Platona vs Patek 5980/1r
So I was having a conversation with a friend of mine. Also a watch fan but never ventured into big brands as its not his primary interest like mine. We were talking about what would be the ultimate watch in our collections. Some may say Grail, more of a I've reached the peak of collecting for me personally.
The choice I was debating was the platona or the Patek. Both chronographs, both PM, both good weights, the list goes on. So given the choice, or for those who have it, what would be your choice and why? For me I couldn't decide, they both tick all boxes I'd want to tick for this watch to fit into my collection. Ideally I would love both but head over heart in that respect. Looking forward to hearing peoples thoughts! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'm in a similar situation, im looking for a watch to finish my collection in the short term! Strongly considering a stainless 5980 white dial and then a platinum Daytona also!
Looking forward to seeing what the outcome will be! |

Thats exactly what sparked the debate. What watch would finish off a collection. Originally thought maybe rose gold Daytona and a rose gold 5711r. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Daytona for me.
This is the single greatest watch I've ever had the pleasure of trying on. |

Platona if you're going to wear it as a daily or almost daily. Otherwise, flip a coin.

This is another thing that's splitting my decision. Both go with each occasion. I probably spend equal time in t-shirts and long sleeve shirts so again it's a really hard decision. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The Daytona is much slicker and matches the sleeve better in my opinion

Patek all day long. Daytona too hard to read what the actual time is.

I'd rather have a 5980 and a SS Daytona C. Prior to the SS I might've gone with the Platona, but I actually almost prefer it it in SS, and sometimes wonder how well the ice blue/brown combo will age with time.

Do you know i did think about this option and would probably look at this option. But as it was one or other between Patek and platona I didn't suggest it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Patek all day long. The platona is an anniversary edition and, although beautiful, doesn't suit the original design of that watch. The PM Patek was meant to be

In this case Patek all day. Not a personal fan of the Platona, it's a beautiful watch but for the price it doesn't sing to me. In my opinion, the 5980 in all gold is the king of all metal bracelets.

Even as a Daytona fan, I might have to go for that beautiful Patek!

Platona. It's almost 1/2 a pound of platinum! It's also the King of the Rolex offering IMHO. Having a Platona in the collection is a great Grail. Not to say the RG Nautilus isn't nice, I just prefer the Platona as a Grail.
