How would you normally respond to...

"That's a nice Rolex you got there. What did you pay for that?".

I feel very uncomfortable when i get asked and sometimes not sure how best to respond. Any tips on how you would respond with being a snob?

If someone asks, I find they usually don't know watches so I reply " cheap, it's a fake. I just liked the looks".

I paid what it was worth to me.

Have to agree Adam in over 35 years of wearing Rolex watches, you could count on one hand the number of times anyone has made a comment about any watch I was wearing.

Of the few people who have ever noticed I wear a Rolex, not one asked what it cost. I've gotten more questions on what our house cost :) and have answered them truthhfully what we payed. It is on record anyway.

And if someone did ask me, I would tell them. Discussion closed most probably and I would never ever say it was a fake.

The very few times I've been asked my answer was always "The right price".

"Probably too much, but it's important to me. "

But of the few comments I have received, I've never been asked about cost.

I had a buddy ask me that. It went:

Him: "So I see the new watch."
Me: "Thanks man. Just got it"
Him: "How much was it?"
Me: <kinda turn my head a little and wince>
Him: "Like $1000?"
Me: "Little under $5000"

....then silence.

It's kind of poor form. If another WIS asked I would feel differently.

Depends on who the question comes from.

Someone I have a personal relationship with? Honest answer.

Someone I don't know well? "I don't like talking about money"

That being said, I've only been asked 2-3 times from close personal friends and family. Never by a stranger or someone I don't know well.

I have never been asked but if I was, I would respond the way my father did when I asked him what things cost. "Money and fair words."

Several ADs in Singapore have asked how much my D-Blue cost but that's about it.

"Same as you paid for your boat and trailer"
"About what you paid for your diamond engagement ring"
"Half what you paid for your wedding reception"
"Half as much as your recent holiday"
"Same as all your dive gear"
"About the same as your Harley"
I could go on....
