Icon20 Problem with weight?

Dear all,

I'm new to this forum and I intend to go for a Rolex submariner. It's either gonna be a Hulk of TT blue dial (the sunburst one). Right now I own a Breitling Transocean Chronograph stainless steel version with the mesh strap. Frankly, for me it's pretty heavy on the wrist making it pretty uncomfortable to wear. I've put it on a scale and it is supposed to be approx. 160g.

I tried the Hulk and TT blue sub in a store and find the TT a little bit heavier, probably because it has gold in it. I'm just afraid that a sub might also be "too heavy" for me. On the other hand, I have ready in this forum that how a watch is balanced might also affect how it feels on the wrist.

As this would be my first Rolex and Sub, I don't want to mess it up, so I hope I can get some opinions/experiences here.

Thanks in advance, Tom.

Weight is one of the reasons I bought a 16610 over a 116610. The older model (with SEL) felt much better on my wrist. I also preferred the more classic styling, but that's another topic.

Stainless sub is less than 160g i think something like 154g with all links in. I have Seikos that outweigh my subc by a lot. 2 tone will be much heavier. Stainless subs are on the light side IMO and are very comfortable. Just looking at breitlings makes my wrist hurt lol.

Weight is different indeed. Try both on and feel which one is best. Enjoy!

The brand is irrelevant.

If a watch is not comfortable then you will not enjoy wearing it.

Tudor pelagos is titanium and super light. Also, a sub on a rubber b or nato is super light.

Beyond that Patek 5167/5711/AP 15202 all very light although much different watches

I have found that the bracelet has a lot to do with how heavy the watch feels on the wrist. I have an old yellow gold Daydate that feels heavy if the bracelet is loose, but not if the bracelet is snug (not tight, just snug). I have a new GMT that feels lighter than its true weight would indicate. I have tried on a new Sub and it felt heavy and the bracelet felt bulky.

For me, the way a watch wears is more subjective than scientific. Ask the AD if you can wear the watch for a few minutes in the store. Five to ten minutes of wearing the watch will be more valuable than a hundred responses on any web site.

I went from a steel Panerai PAM24 submersible to a Hulk last year. All the weight in the Panerai was pretty much inside the case, the strap was light and made it unbalanced.
When I moved about it would thump against my wrist bones unless it was fastened really tight.
I also could get it to shake on my wrist after moving because the rotor spinning inside was so noticeable.
when I went to try Rolex I tried on a DSSD which I thought would feel the most similar because I had been wearing the Panerai for a decade but I found it much more balanced with no rotor wobble.
I ended up going for the Hulk because I love the dial and am less likely to catch it on things and cause damage like I did with the Panerai and probably would have done with a DSSD.
So I've come at it from a different angle than you but found that it isn't the weight that dictates the comfort. Even if my Hulk wasn't as comfortable to wear I'd still love it but it's a bonus that it is.

I was in a very similar situation as you a few months ago. I had my decision narrowed down to those two watches and was also concerned about the weight. Since I'm only 130 pounds, skinny wrist, and had been wearing an Apple watch for the past year when I tried on the Rolex it felt like an anchor strapped to my wrist.

I ended up purchasing the 116613LB back in April and I've worn it every day since. The first week was still hard getting used to the weight wearing it 10+ hours a day but now it's no longer an issue. The bracelet is awesome for getting a good fit and I don't see how I could ever get tired of looking at this watch. Super glad I made the decision to go for it.

The glidelock clasp makes for a perfect fit and balance in my experience.
I can't see weight being an issue.

Just join a gym.

After all, 160g is a substantial weight to carry around for an untrained arm.

The glidelock should help immensely, but try them on and see if you can wear it for a while.

You mention being afraid of the sub being too heavy. When you tried it on, how did it feel on your wrist? It's undoubtedly a substantial watch, but far from heavy, especially in ss. This is all very subjective, of course, as it will feel differently to everyone.

Welcome to the forum!

I agree with the Pelagos suggestion, but it is slightly larger in terms of diameter.

Try each one on multiple times over a week or two. You'll know by the end of that time which one is for you. If you're like me, your answer could be both ;)

I vote for Pelagos as well. Wears wonderfully. But I will say a well fitting bracelet on a sub will make all the difference in the world compared to a mesh bracelet in my opinion. But I am not a mesh bracelet fan.

My thoughts, too. But do try them on for yourself to see. Good luck,

I am a very slender guy. I own and wear a platinum daytona, one of the heaviest Rolexes. I don't even notice the weight on my wrist.

So I advise wearing a heavy watch for a couple hours before deciding against it. Good luck.

I've found the same thing to be true. The Sub has some nice weight, but due to the case, bracelet, and Glidelock clasp, I find it to be remarkably comfortable.
