A defect dial can appear anytime.

X2. What I have noticed though is that the 1980s seemed to have an abundant amount of defective dials - whether they are suffering from excessive cracking (spider dial) or exhibiting corrosion on the dial in the area outside or around the markers.

An "R" serial number with a defective dial would not be considered uncommon based on my experience.

Most of the ones I have seen here in HK seem to have been mid-1980s, stuck in dealer windows, unwanted and unloved.

For the Triple 6s, they were common in the 8.4M range onwards (after Rolex made the move from matte dials to glossy dials with metal surrounds).
