Sea Dweller: Days may be numbered...
Since the recent purchase of a Daytona, the Sea Dweller has been marginalised and today is the first time I've worn it in a while...and I'm reminded just how nice it is!
But it may need to go! I want to keep it and it has a particularly special place in my heart because I was lucky enough to purchase it on the day of release in the UK, which was pretty cool at the time. But it has to get wrist time in order for it to stay in the collection, and having already been marginalised by the Daytona, it's only going to get worse when I add a Royal Oak which is next on the list. For anyone considering a Sea Dweller, don't let any of this put you off! It is a magnificent watch and I personally love the fact that I have never seen another in the wild. But I have pretty small wrists (6.5") and it's arguably just a touch too big for me, something I didn't realise until I got the Daytona, which fits me perfectly. For the time being, it remains a much loved part of the collection, but it's days may well be numbered...

I've been eyeing this watch for a while mate, great piece. Considering letting my 114060 go in order to get one. I'd keep it if I were you...

It's an excellent watch.
It's a modern submariner made specifically for the WIS. There are times when I wish I had my sd4k on me......... Well guess it's time to hit the safety deposit! |

Think long and hard. I've been regretting letting mine go almost daily for 1.5-2 months. If I don't decide to save up for a PM or go back to AP (unlikely as the price I really want is more than a PM Rolex) I'm getting one back in a few weeks.

Well if it doesn't get the wrist time there's no pint keeping it, however I would give it a little longer between making the decision.
Can't see my 116600 going anywhere it's my all time fav SS Rolex. I'm following a similar path to you but with a white 116500 to sit alongside my 116600 and black 15400 |

I felt the same way too when the Kermit came in..and 2 weeks later the dweller was out. I
do love the dweller very much still, but faced with the other 3.....sighs.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

A common source of woe on this forum is people selling stuff and regretting it a few months later. You may well find that you SD is the ideal watch to take on holiday with you and that could easily rekindle a love affair with it. I go through phases of dissing a watch just to fall in love with it a few weeks later. My advice is hold fire before doing anything final. Regards Mick |

It happens and I get where you're coming from. Personally, I'd always want a diver in the collection. Looks great on you!

Thanks guys - always happy to take advice - especially from more experienced collectors. Will hold fire for another six months at least, as I don't need the cash for anything else right now, so no harm.

Good plan, and also if/when there is a price adjustment it should help residuals.

Very good advice! To be fair, most of us have made that mistake in our early years!

Mezz72, the correct word or term in reference to your daytona bezel is aftermarket. Cheers!

Funny. I really miss my sd and can't stand my Daytona. It feels so small! Different strokes...

Getting back to the original post. If the watch is too big for him and he's not wearing it... I say flip! It's one thing to miss a watch due to your tast changing, but the watch isn't going to get smaller and his wrist won't get larger.

its a great watch and I love my newly acquired one. It just seems like a rugged manly watch, and the black face just screams BOLD.
Stupid question, What does 'WIS' refer to, I have seen a lot of post with this reference.

If it were just a tad bigger and the caseback wasn't so deep this could have very easily have been my one and only Rolex, but it just didn't work out. Otherwise it really is a magnificent watch.

I can understand where you are coming from Vincent. Since I have acquired my 5711, my SD4K does seem a tad large on my smallish wrists, but I do love it and it makes an excellent goto watch and my favourite from the Rolex range. Having said that, if I owned a 116500 like you, I would probably have to lose either the Daytona or the Seadweller. I prefer the Seadweller looks and lack of PCLs, giving it a more tool like, sporty, ruggedness which I like and having a date and rotating bezel is much more useful than a chronograph, which lets be honest, is pretty redundant. However, the Daytona is a slightly better size watch for me and probably for you from the sounds of it. So a difficult call to make. If you have to lose one, I think you are doing the right thing and waiting a bit longer after the honeymoon period of the Daytona has worn off and see how you feel. I suspect once you have the Royal Oak then one of those Rolex pieces will have little wrist time and the decision will be easier. Good luck!
