Need your wise advice before making a big purchase...
Again, trying to add to my collection & to celebrate my 40th bday. Already own Patek 5712/1a and Rolex DSSD (Blue face). Was originally set on purchasing a Patek 5164R. Still think it is a great one to own. But then - I came across the Lange Datograph Up Down in pink gold. I have only read the amazing reviews and seen incredible pics but have never come across this watch in person. Anyone own or have seen one in person? What are your detailed thoughts? AND Thoughts on Datograph vs Patek 5164R would be most appreciated. Only have 2 weeks to decide! Many thanks. |

I've had the regular stainless 5164, and currently own the Datograph UP/DOWN in pink gold.
Besides being gold, that's where the similarity ends. It really comes down to your need for a second time zone. The Lange goes well in formal attire, and equally well with jeans, as does the 5164R. However, the movement.. IMHO is absolutely stunning and makes it a watch that I can almost say for certain that I'd never flip. The date function on the Dato is also much easier to read. And to top it off, it's a JOY wind! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Patek is the safe choice because unfortunately the New RG Dato is not retaining value. But if you can get it for the right price I would go Dato.

Just got the 5164R, which is a great casual/sports watch. Have the Dato up/down in platinum, which can be worn with jeans or a suit and every situation in between. If anything the gold Dato is dressier, though it probably also can work for casual. Leather strap and modest water resistance on Dato means it shouldnt get wet; rubber strap and 100M water resistance on 5164R means it can be worn to swim, etc.
Real question is what you want it for - I think given that you own two great sports watches already (though admittedly the 5712 can be worn with a suit), I would lean towards the Dato. And as noted, you have to buy right - if you get a good price on the Dato it wont be much more than the 5164R. |

I think you need go try on a bunch of watches and make a decision.
You've asked this same question like 4-5 times with different watches in different sub-forums. When I see that, it's a tell tale YOU need more time with the watches, not asking us what we think. Take your time. Just my .02. |

Having had the Dato, stick with the Patek if you're not getting a great discount on either watch. Watch for watch the Dato is the nicer piece but the resale is brutal.

I think this is a good match up actually as I really like both but the Dato needs to be tried on as it wears quite a bit bigger than the 5164R and is thicker. Caseback view however is spectacular and also needs to be seen and if it can then be resisted then the PP for sure is for you.

100% I would definitely get the lange. Its simply a more interesting watch to me. You already have two sports watches. Look at the movements of the pp and the dato and then decide.

Not sure why these 2 are matched up - if resale no issue, Dato.

Both nice pieces but I prefer the Lange by a wide margin if you can afford to eat 20k or never plan to sell ever.

Lange by a mile for sure. I get the appeal of the 5164R but just never grew on me. The Lange on the other hand.. /drool

Go try em on. I've never had a hard time making a decision between two pieces after trying them both on.

Tough decision... Hmm.. I think the 5164R is priced well for a
Substantial RG watch. I prefer the Datograph in platinum so 5164R for me. |

Completely different watches. The Dato is a horological icon. The aquanaut is a nice sports watch.

I saw the Datograph but the perpetual, never saw the UP/DOWN and found it amazing, the movement alone is a piece of art, even on the normal one it is awesome, and saw the 5164R, amazing piece as well in RG, my AD had SS and RG, the SS looked boring, the RG just pops and is awesome.
But I think the Datograph is an iconic piece and for me THE Lange piece to have, the 5164 is easier to wear you can even swim with it or wear it in very hot humid weather whereas the Dato no, I guess it really depends on what pieces you have. In any case both of these pieces need to be bought right, especially the Dato, as they will loose on resale, the PP is IMHO priced way too high, but even in SS it is priced way too high for what it is. Personally I think I would get the Dato, but I am getting a 5167R at the end of the month, so having both Aquas in RG would be too much, but even if I wasn't getting it, I think the Dato is just a cooler iconic watch. Good luck on the choice, and as Paul said be sure to see both in real and really think about it, and buying at the right price is essential on these 2... But to be honest I would get the Dato in PT not RG.. |

Datograph by a mile if you don't mind its size.
5164 has little decorations on movement parts and the their finishing pales in comparison against the datograph. |

Don't think we should compare Dato movement finish to a non chrono, but silly. Compare a ALS 3/4 plate to the 5164. Otherwise compare the 5170. There is more to a watch than a pretty movement! The resale of ALS tells you all you need to Know.

Sound advice from everyone
Hopefully the OP will try both pieces on if they are firm on getting one of them. I love the new version of the Datograph but not a particular fan of the 5164 model. So my decision based on your choices would be pretty easy, though I would still want to try on the Dato again.

The Datograph wins for the movement, even if to compare with a 5170 movement I choose the Dato, but to be honest I prefer the 39mm Dato, it has way more charm... |
