Rolex Value Long Term?

Ok, so this may be a pretty broad question, but here it goes - I have had a Rolex GMT Master (not sure what edition or whatever, I am not relatively savvy with Rolexes) for approximately 10 years. Best purchase I have ever made - wear it every day and get compliments non stop.

I have been doing well at work and have been going back and forth with rewarding myself with a new Rolex - I really want a Rose Gold time piece, still trying to find the exact model. My friend got one that was around $25k to $30K and I am open to spending that much.........

My question is this - as a long term investment, how well do these things hold value?

Just buy it right......for a precious metal model, I would buy from a trusted seller on the forum.

As John says buy smart and save 25-30% from a trusted seller. Which models you thinking of? Daytona, DD40?

Better than most watches but overall, not well. There are many threads on this, but basically you'll see a 20 percent drop after it's considered used and then slowly drop from there. Only true collectibles reimerge with notable gains after decades and that's merely speculation.

Totally agree with what was said above. Buy from a trusted seller and you'll be even better off for the long run. Can't wait to see what you'll end up getting.

Thanks everyone. How can I find a trusted seller on this forum? Sorry, I have yet to really wrap my hands around navigating this.

Really what I want is a Rose Gold rolex - something with a 40MM+ case, I am flexible on face color but really like chocolate or the tiger stripe one.

Thanks again everyone.

Think about a Rolex as a luxury purchase and not as an investment. It's highly unlikely that you would ever see a profit selling a watch. Buy it and enjoy it as an indulgence.

Look at the DayDate in rose gold. It is stunning.

Why not consider a vintage for that kind of money, less downside?

There are two on here where you cannot go wrong:

www.takuyawatches.com

www.davidsw.com

I've dealt with Takuya (his name is Thanh Do) and he is awesome, and I know there are tons of people on this forum who swear by David.

Good luck!

I've bought 2 from Takuya and both times face-to-face and will do again someday. He is a standup guy.

I also agree if I were ever going to by a PM model I'd buy new or second hand from a TS due to the depreciation on those models. The only PM model that interests me is a WG DD 40. But right now just more than I care to spend on a watch.

Are you buying a watch or a stock?

It's definitely not a sound investment. I don't think any watch is.

Precious metals models take a higher initial hit when you buy them new, FYI.

Thank you again all - very impressed at the knowledge and passion that members of this board show toward the Rolex brand. Truly outstanding.

I understand that it isn't an "investment" per say, but anytime I am going to pay over $20K for a piece of jewelry, I want to at least sleep at night knowing that I can point to it as a valuable possession from a monetary standpoint.

If you want a good long term investment take a look at some mutual funds.

A watch is not a good investment.

Or...take a look at other elite / made by hand / small production watches...

FP Journe, Phillipe DuFour etc.

Will the random Dufus know what you're wearing? No. you'd really have to like the watch Vs wanting to own the brand for its perceived status by those unaware of watches other than Rolex.

Life isn't a practice for anything. With luxuries, buy what you really want. Have fun, enjoy it. Who cares about 'Long term value' . as Keynes remarked: ' in the long-term we are all dead'.
Buy what you can afford and enjoy. That's the real 'payback ' on your purchase. The pleasure it gives you.

steel sport model rolex will always appreciate over time. PM models may or may not. this is adjusted for inflation. that said buy what you like notwithstanding increase or decrease in fair market value.

Thanks all. I guess maybe my post was misunderstood. I understand that a Watch/Rolex isn't really an investment and dont intend to sell all my investments and put my cash into watches. But I am thinking of spending upwards of $20K on something - which is probably more than I've spent on anything in my life save for my car/home/wedding. Because of this, I just want to make sure my I's are dotted and T's are crossed as far as research goes.

Long-term, buying a gold watch is an awful purchase - you're going to lose a lot of money if you buy it and try to sell it in 10 years. But that shouldn't matter if you can afford it - it's like buying a luxury car at that point. You could easily drive a Camry around, but where's the fun in that?

Gotcha. Yeah, when you sink 20k into something, you don't want to just throw it down a hole, for sure.

I would go along with other posters that suggested buying pre-owned in excellent condition from a trusted seller here. Let somebody else take the depreciation hit and if you buy right, you should be fine.

Just understand that a PM watch is a different beast than steel, in terms of value. They just don't generally do as well. But man, somethings you just can't put a price on...

Makes sense to me.

From what I've read, trusted sellers are the way to go on PM pieces if you live in the US. From the reviews I've seen and the comments from members who've used them, David and Takuya are the two names that stand out. I've not read a bad word on either.

I personally prefer the AD experience so visit a few and don't be afraid to head out of town. See what piece blows your skirt up and talk numbers and then compare those with trusted sellers. If you can source what you want LNIB, then the savings could be even more significant.

Good luck
