A nice watch does make a difference...

...according to this author.

Perhaps we're doing it all wrong and renting is the way to go (sarcasm)? Your opinion?

It does make a difference in certain situations. I dress conservatively and work in Oil and Gas. The watch I wear most often is my Sea Dweller 4K. It gets noticed on occasion, but it isn't flashy. I also take notice of other people wearing nice watches and sometimes it leads to good spirited conversations about a shared interest in watches.

I read the piece on the link (thanks), but I think he is exaggerating (i.e., lying) in at least a couple of points...

I love my Panerai Pam90 and my Bluesy since I got into watches. I dont get any love from the ladies All the compliments are usually from stuffy old men who are usually 60+

Paul, I have no idea. My 116713 attracts girls like crazy, mostly at stop lights when my arm is hanging out my Porsche.

Yes Grady, over 60 you're invisible (unless you have a Ferrari, and then the car gets noticed but you get unfavourable reviews "Look at the old try-hard in the Ferrari".)

The story is a paid for advertorial by that watch renting company that mysteriously keeps being mentioned on here.

You're probably like me, Paul. The rest of your wardrobe isn't a match for your watch. I don't know what kind of car you drive, but I'm in a 70 year old man Grand Marquis with white wall tires. Oh, it's a conversation starter with the ladies....once they stop laughing and giving me crap about it.

It's complete crap. I travel internationally at least once every month and even if I'm not in First or Biz (no point when only travelling within Europe) then I'm still in the First lounge and have fast track/priority everything as I have the highest status with Oneworld. This is what gets you upgrades and being treated a bit better than cattle, not a rented watch.

FWIW I never wear an expensive watch when travelling, ever. I do look at other people when travelling though and for Westerners at least they are mostly like me, boring basic watches. Not saying you don't see some nice watches on peoples wrists in First but it's by no means the norm.

I've also never, ever seen any pax getting special treatment because of a watch they're wearing.

This article is pure BS. A sponsored ad by the EJ company at best.

I think I've received a comment about my watches from a stranger twice in ten years or so. These "incidents" where paced 8 years apart.

That a nice watch would somehow help you to get airplane tickets when stranded... Give me a break. Perhaps if you give the agent your watch.

"You can tell the real money from the upgrades" -Ha! I've never paid full fare for a business class ticket in my whole life!

What a ridiculous article. In no way have I ever had any special treatment from wearing a watch. Not even my 50K+ euro AP's.

Blatant advertorial from a disgusting rag of a paper. I notice the OP is banned, so obviously spamming our forum with their tripe. Good job mods.

Yeah, the article keeps referencing the Eleven James watch rental company. Might as well add a coupon code in the end.

It's probably because you left the gas cap on the Porsche open. Duh.

Naw that's not it. If they can see my watch out the window they can't see the gas cap, it's on the passenger side. Much more likely a tail light is out or one of my tires is low.

There was a similar article in the Daily Mail yesterday, same watches too. I lost interest after the first five syllables. Load of ol' horse do-do

People are watching. If you own an HVAC company, it may not be something you are aware every day, but something that may make the difference when discussing that bid for that 8 figure system.

If you are working your way to the C suite, you can be sure they are watching, daily.

I call BS.

I wear my Rolex and even if someone does notice they won't mention it. Maybe in the rare instance where you happen be next to another WIS.

I will say that I've had more compliments on my 500 dollar Swiss Army Chrono than my Sub.

I don't think its article is very truthful. Ive never got a compliment on any of my watches and mine a little bit more noticeable than a blancpain or Bell & Ross. But hey i guess he's trying to sell the watch rent scheme.

Likewise and even when younger you could count on one hand that anyone made a comment about whatever watch I was wearing.

I think he has some valid points...

When I wear my Gold Rolex, I have noticed that I get a lot better service at a few places:

1. car dealerships

2. and basically, any other place that wants to put their hand in my pocket...

and as far as renting, I actually just enjoy wearing my watch every minute of the day.
