Is it safe to wear your Rolex while boating the Rio Grande
Taking a trip to Big Bend National Park and will be making a boat run through the Santa Elena Canyon. That region appears to be dominated by 4 conflicting drug gangs. It also in the most remote location in all of Texas. 10 hour drive from home. Im torn on deciding wether or not I should wear my sub

I guess if you get caught up in some kind of gang situation. I would be more worried about getting out of that situation alive over the fact they will steal my watch.

Texas ranger Chuck Norris should be close by, no worries....
![]() But seriously, if you're worried, don't take it and wear a Casio or something. Have fun!

I think when someone asks if it is safe, it's probably not safe :) a G-Shock would be more suitable.

My father and I barely escaped with our lives trying to cross the stream at that point once. Don't ask me why. I was only 12 years old.
For some reason my dad wanted to get to the other bank at the far right of that picture and the farther we walked the deeper the mud got and eventually we swam to the other side. Getting back was just as treacherous. My mother and grandparents were having screaming fits by the time we got back and the ranger who'd arrived on the scene just stood there in disbelief. Dad could be crazy sometimes. We weren't wearing Rolexes.

How come these threads aren't banned yet? Anything shy of dipping it in a volcano or using a drill on max speed as an autowinder should be fine for your watch. If you encounter drug gangs, your watch will be the least of your worries.

I spent three weeks in the big bend area in the late 80's on a botanical survey. We walked across the river every night to go to a little cantina on the Mexican side (great food and a strong alcoholic beverage that tasted a lot like gasoline). Time of year and silt born events probably play a role in the level of risk in the river itself, now add drug gangs and it may no longer be the idyllic destination it once was. I can picture a Sierra Madre moment. I'd probably take the G-Shock on this trip. |
