It's proven: Men are not rational.

Ok, so no need to exaggerate. One watch will never be enough. But maybe two perfect watches might be enough. But, noooo...!!! No, a man will never accept the rational concept of balance, moderation, and common sense. Who needs another watch having the two watches below...??? Well, you guys know the answer.

Irrational perhaps. But if ever called upon to be moderate and reasonable, you can be comfortable in knowing that you can sell off the rest of the collection and those two will make a perfect pair for life.

Then again, let's not kid ourselves...is it "reasonable" to even need a Patek and a Rolex?

Who cares, life is for enjoying!

Those are a great pair! There is nothing irrational about how a man's collection can always be improved through expansion.

That's a dynamic duo. But there's always a reason rational or not for the next one.....

When it comes to watches v shoes and handbags our irrationalities are comfortingly amateurish. I've been on a purse forum where a thread was going on to its 250th page and many were in the hundreds.

I wouldn't have guessed that your other hobby was purse collecting.

It was to help out a friend as I was a sort of forums expert, but man they scared me off pretty quick and I just said to him go pay retail and not from ebay. I hear Mumsnet is also not for the faint of heart or men.

I was telling my wife I was buying a rather expensive sporting item and her totally rational answer was "why do you need another X". My response was "what does need have anything to do with it". She shook her head and walked away.

As long as my collecting watches and other unneeded items is economically rational, she doesn't mind. On the flip side, I cannot deny her buying something or doing a remodeling if I buy an expensive toy.

Buy a matched pair of Purdy's, great to use, admire, and they gain value over time. Sound like anything else?

I shoot over and unders and the OU Purdeys are heavy, over 7.5 pounds. I've tried them. This might sound crass to some but I much prefer the high-end Berettas... or the not so high-end. For side-side I have a pair of custom Garbi from Eibar. Picked them up at the factory. Nice pair.

Sorry, but I think this is a verboten topic here.

I know what you mean. Between the 14060M and the 16570 polar, I have the perfect pair, IMO. At times, it makes me question all my other pieces thinking they are just "extra".

I am returning from an outdoor sporting adventure in North Central Idaho.

Before I went, I was debating on what watch or watches to take. The candidates were my very old DayDate, very new GMT, a plastic Swiss Army, or even buy a new Submariner. The terrain is treacherous and even worse when wet.

I decided on the DayDate. No regrets even after doing a backside down a 10' ditch hidden by reeds. I had a sore back but the watch was undamaged. I think I would have been devastated if I had buggered up a new watch.

That experience made me question even buying the Sub.
