After getting a SD 4000, figured I could change my old explorer 1 by adding a leather strap to tune down the metal look. But can't decide which style looks the best.
Searched the web, basically there are two types of leather straps people chose for the explorer 1, the distressed brown or the croc style dress strap. If I had a 114270 , I would definitely go for the vintage look. For the 214270, I am not sure.

What would you guys pick?

I'm looking for a strap as per the first or second photo for mine. Started a thread on here asking about the Hodinkee ones but no posts! If yo go the vintage style let me know where you find a good one. Cheers

If you searched the web or here, there was a thread complaining about quality of hodinkee. A guy claimed what he received was totally different than the pic shown.

The first and second pic are actually the same strap. I found it on the web, the OP said he got it from ColaReb. I looked it up but don't like what I saw.

There's a shop, originally hand making leather straps for Panerai watches call Wotancraft. You can google it or contact them on FB. I will pay them a visit today to see what they got for Rolex.

not sure about that.....look at the stitching - clearly different straps. also, the leather seems different, too, with the 1st being more vintage and the 2nd seeming like a simple calf?

Ended up permanently lending to the Mrs. She put a black alligator leather strap on it.

May I ask where you got the Rolex buckle? Is it genuine OEM? I can't find them.

It's worth hanging around Panerai forums for some inspiration on straps. It's a cottage industry for Panerai. Most of the good custom makers would do something bespoke for a Rolex.

Ammo bag straps are great for the distressed look. Or shell cordovan for 100% class meets function. ;)

None of them.

The first strap is too chunky for that watch. The gator with curved ends is too dressy. I would go for a padded calf strap, personally. Contrasting stitching may help dress it down a bit, but tone stitching will work, too.

Just came back from Wotancraft. Finally set my mind on one. Didn't go for the distressed vintage look as I suit up for work most of the week. Chose the one on the top. The second pic is the close up.

I like the first one but this watch looks good on just about any strap (ie Speedy). I have had mine on a NATO, Shell Cord #8 and black strap all in the last couple weeks based on the occasion and my wardrobe. They all work great....it took me awhile to warm to the watch but it is quickly becoming my favorite.

The shop does have a strap made from ammo bags which costs a little more.

I like the last one - black calf.

As noted, any of the Panerai strap makers will usually do a narrower strap suitable for a Rolex. Tell them you want it thin so it does not look overwhelmingly thick.
