Which Car would you choose for comfort - BMW/Merc/Audi

Hey Everyone,

I have been inactive here lately because I am searching diligently for a new car now.

I really want something comfortable for longer drives and luxurious in the $150,000 range. Not too sporty but luxurious. Comfortable not stiff.

I have my 911 for sport, and looking to trade my X5M because its just not comfortable at all for longer drives. Actually been disappointing because my previous X5M E70 was so comfortable. Can't believe the new F15 seats and ride is much less so.
And I am finding currently I have no need for an SUV.
So here I am looking for comfort for days I want to relax and not race, and long drives (especially).

Here are my top choices so far and all definitely would be fully loaded to brim minus unnecessary stuff like pedestrian night vision, etc.

1) 2017 BMW 750
2) 2017 Mercedes S550
3) 2017 Audi A8/S8
4) Other (in $150K range loaded)

Honestly they all look good to me, I am curious if anyone here has had 2 or more of these to compare long term for comfort, especially on longer drives.

I have my 911 GTS for adrenaline/speed, but ALSO really want something comfortable and luxurious for serotonin/peace.

Thanks for your feedback

Paging Paul

FWIW..I would have the merc myself. Not an owner of any of the three but I am a car nut and that would be my pick for racking up miles.

Seriously though if you're not after sporty but luxurious then you should just avoid the German brands and buy a Lexus.

Obscene reliability and comfort.

Thanks Tom, that is how I am leaning but I haven't test driven the 2017 750 yet or the S8.
But I DID test drive the S550… Most comfortable seats/ride I have experienced.
Ride is sooo smooth and tech equals BMW.

We'll see, BMW is tomorrow.

Or a buick…LOL
I AM looking for sporty AND luxurious. These cars exude both. I test drove the S550 and it was definitely BOTH, though more luxurious where the AMG S63/65 definitely more sporty. But even the S550 non-amg is 0-60 in 4.5. Suspension is admittedly not that stiff, but that is fine for this car.
Same with the S8, definitely both and so too the BMW 750. So I do want both but for this car I want a bigger dose of luxurious.

No derespect to the luxury toyota, I mean Lexus, but just doesn't appeal to me.
But you do bring up a good point about reliability which is also important for long trips.

I would go to Aston Martin or Maserati. 4 doors versions are fantastic!!

BMW, then Mercedes as i also take into account the after sales service. You might also want to try the Jaguar. Maserati is nice, as is the Audi, but the cost to service them is high. That's perhaps why someone else mentioned the Lexus (due to great customer service and reliability. i can not stress enough to AVOID any and all VW Group products (Audi, Bentley, VW, Porsche, etc) as it seems they are majorly scr@wing over customers the moment warranty ends and then very expensive and common problems occur. Seems the VW Group is building cars to last juuust enough to make it past the warranty.

Hard to argue with the S550.

Consider as an option, a fully loaded Cadillac CT6 Platinum and save $60k off your $150k budget. Your rear seat passengers will thank you.

As a Porsche 911S owner, I might consider the new Panamera S E-Hybrid loaded with goodies, and still save $40k or so. I find the 911S seats to be the most comfortable seats I've ever experienced other than those in a Corvette C5.

i agree.. i've heard tons of problems and bad news about cars manufactured by the vw group all over the world..

i'd recommend the 750 beemer for comfort and for true comfort and luxury it's hard to beat a rolls royce if your budget permits that is.. but you could always go the preowned route..

It is hard to argue against the S class as its won so many accolades in Road tests. Love Lexus too to be honest but I think the S550 is probably the best sedan being built today.

S550, no question for what your criteria you listed. The BMW resale value drops like a lead weight balloon. The Audi has a great interior but never drove one, but I have lots of experience in the S class and it is everything, have fun shopping! Keep us updated.

You have some great cars to be able to choose from. I currently own a 2014 S550 and have never been in a better vehicle for ride, comfort and power. I have been in the luxury car game for more than 20 years and I will tell you the current generation of Mercedes-Benz is the bench mark. Pick up a copy of Consumer Reports or go on YouTube and look at the reviews on each vehicle. There is even some head to head competition. I have driven the new BMW as I had previously owned a 750 and while it was great it does not have the curb appeal to me of the Benz. The Audi is due for a significant update as when I test drove it felt like a previous generation Benz or BMW. I would not buy or lease any of these vehicles I would look CPO. If you do your research you can see the depreciation and the warranty on the CPO on both the Benz and BMW are great. Save yourself 30K. Buy a 16 or 15 model with sub 20K miles. Then buy yourself some more watches. I look forward to seeing what you decide.

My two Mercedes were far above the reliability and service options for my two BMW's.

I would start with the S550 and try to find a reason NOT to buy it.

As for Lexus, yes reliable but boring soulless cars. I tried to like one and it was boring, bland and too cookie cutter, just like Toyota.

S class is the king of luxury sedans...period. Year in and out they are the standard, I've had several (not the current generation yet) and enjoyed them thoroughly. Had a 7 that I enjoyed, but went back to the S because the difference was too obvious.

If driving myself, I will choose the BMW as I am a die-hand BMW fan and the drive quality and feel is unbeatable. But if someone is chauffeuring me, I will prefer the Mercedes for marginally better comfort.

Owned new MB S and BMW 7 series.

S drives 'floaty' to me. Nice car though.

7 series is a 'little' more sporty but refined and if you're younger, might be more enjoyable than S class.

Both MUST almost buy at dealer cost otherwise you will lose $30k minimum driving off the lot (Audi 8 don't even bother--dealers aren't even buying them back right now...$50-$60k loss minimum).

Buy right and enjoy whichever you end up with.

Pfffft, that's nothing. Try VW Group Bentley's and look at the MASSIVE depreciation on those. Of course it could be the sheer lack of reliability and very high parts/service cost, but that seems to be the norm with VW Group products as another on this thread agreed as well.

I have been fortunate enough to own cars from all three brands.

While I am a huge BMW fan boy, I am going to go with Merc on this one because of your criteria.

While the BMW is a lot more fun to drive, the Merc is way more comfortable and it is an absolute joy on long trips.

Get the S... For 150k you can have a low optioned 63 or a crazy over optioned 550. Since u live in FL, make sure u get the Magic Body Control option for the 550, it's supposed to be amazing.

He didn't ask about Bentley...or RR. There are plenty brands that tank
