Explorer is next for me
I've decided that I have to get an 114270 Explorer, the direct descendant of the original Rolex tool watch. The simplistic beauty of the watch is a wonderful contrast to my other watches. I've got my eye on a couple but have a question. I know the older Explorers with Tritium dials had the 3,6 &9 in Tritium but the new Super Luminova examples have no lume in the numbers. What material is used to fill these? Also, does anyone feel like posting a little eye candy of their Explorers? I love looking at these beautys.

Why not pick up the Expy II Polar dial that Steven has in the FS section ?

I went back and forth on the Expy I or II and decided that the I is for me. I have my 16710 for second time zones and as stated above I really like the classic beauty of the Explorer.

I was looking at the 3,6,9 last night. It is simply beautiful and beautifuly simple. I think it is a great choice.

Great call Buz! Its an understated model but one of my favorites in the collection. The Explorer 1 is all about simplicity and to me, that is what makes it one of the most elegant models in the professional line. It just tells you the time: hours, minutes, seconds. What the sole purpose of a watch is supposed to be. Thats what makes the Explorer great I think.

I like the Explorer as well, I just wish they made it larger. It's seems too small for my wrist.....but it's certainly a beauty to look at. Thanks for the pics.

Explorer? Great choice!
Hi Buzz, If you like the Explorer go for it! The older plastic crystal 1016 Explorer with slower beat 1570 movement had the 3-6-9 in Tritium and so were luminous. The sapphire crystal 14270 Explorer with the 3000 movement comes in Tritium and Luminova but does not have luminous 3-6-9. The numbers have white inserts but they do not glow. The current 114270 Explorer uses an upgraded 3031 movement and has an SEL & Fliplock bracelet. Like the 14270 Explorer, the 3-6-9 are not luminous. Nevertheless, the 114270 is a cracker of a watch and is a great choice! Kind regards Chris in Melbourne |

The Explorer is a fantastic watch. It is 36mm, but it is a great package.
My one reservation is that the 3, 6, and 9 (squarish in shape) do not glow as they contain no luminous material, that is a little disappointing from a tool watch perspective.

It could be the picture, or monitor differences... It glows the same color as all the other superluminova Rolexes do. Primarily light green w/some slight turquoise mixed in.

Thanks for the encouragement guys and a special thanks to MRDI, Pat (that lume pic blows me away), Chris, and G.J for the visual treats. Those pictures reinforce the fact that simplicity is beauty.

Just look at it this way... you're getting a SS DJ case on an Oyster band w/GMT II style fliplock clasp, COSC certified Submariner movement and a sports/outdoors/field style dial. I love mine for it's quiet elegance, classic rugged field watch looks, clean classy dial and extreme legibility. Oh yeah, it's the most comfortable Rolex I've owned as well. Many view this watch as underwhelming. To me, this modern classic is anything but...

I love the Explorer. Was astounded to see one in Cardiff at £2600...that is a lot more money than I thought they were...spesh when a mint 3 year old Polar dial Expy II went for a grand recently at a local auction!!!!!!! Was gutted I missed that one!
