Sea Dweller 4000 (116600) Discontinued?
I just got a call from my AD (Feb 2 11:30am US Eastern Time) who says he was on the phone with Rolex HQ in New York today placing an order, and was told that the Sea Dweller 4000 (116600) has been discontinued effective right now, and that no more can be ordered from Rolex. I know many times intel sourced from AD networks isn't reliable, and I looked for other mentions of this and have not seen anything about it. It means this is either very relevant, interesting, new information, or that it's a false alarm. What have other forum members heard?

Might be different in the states, but the ADs I speak to in the Uk tell me they can't order from Rolex and its pot luck on what turns up for them to sell?
Happy to be corrected! |

For once I honestly hope this turns out correct. Why? If Rolex should discontinue the SD4K 50 years after it was introduced (by name) - and NOT introducing an anniversary model of the SD - I would be very surprised. So, let's hope there will be an anniversary model of the SD at Basel 2017.

Never understood why they brought it back when they ditched the original back in 2009. It got lost between the Sub and the DSSD. As for thinking it will have any inherent collectibility? Maybe. In about 50+ years. I've seen too many people buy up the 2009 last issue of the old SD, put it in their safes as an investment, and then loose patience a few years later and then try and sell it to lukewarm reception.

Rolex is too shrewd to pull it off their site. They may discontinue it, but they won't tell until Basel.

Nonsense. Roles never tells AD's what is discontinued and ADs are happy with whatever they generally receive. Watch was introduced less than three years ago, it is highly doubtful it would be discontinued.

i dont think OP is lying. i think the sd4k is getting replaced with different color dial lettering (red or blue).

I agree with the above. I believe the SD4K may have been discontinued perhaps because Rolex decided to launch/introduce the 50th anniversary version with the red lettering. if they don't discontinue the current model it would just be a flood of redundant models. Makes sense to now have the SD4K with the red lettering and a Deep Sea version with all white lettering. The 116610LV (Hulk) was initially just an anniversary version but ended up staying in their stable for the long term due to demand. RPR may be onto something with all the speculation for BaselWorld 2017

Take this with a grain of salt...I was told from store manager at Rolex Boutique in NY that they haven't had new SD4K in several months. They sold their last one in Dec and they typically have 4-5 on hand at any time. Store manager spoke to head of Rolex USA and asked if SD is discontinued. He said "of course not" with a wink ;) and a smile :)
The general consensus is that the current SD4K will be discontinued and replaced with a new 50th anniversary SD Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If Rolex wants the next Sea-dweller to be a big seller, they should make it 42mm to better fill the gap between the Subs and the DSSD

Norwegian AD sell SD4K, so they're not that difficult to get.

I think they should add Red-letting to Sea-Dweller in this 50th edition and keep it for few years(like 50th anniversary LV for 7 years). That is only way to increase huge sales in SD. Sub and DSSD-Blue is selling huge and they need something to figure out to sell SD in huge numbers as well.
Obviously I don't know the numbers but it is clear enough that SD4K is overpriced and hard sell at that price. Even on grey market it is around $8.5K always. It is a hard sell when you price it over Hulk and BLNR which are more appealing watches. It is only model in recent times which has huge discounts in its MSRP everywhere from an AD to Trusted seller to grey market. |

Rolex is so hard pressed for those kinds of changes. I seriously doubt they would do that. Explorer II is 42mm and probably their weakest seller in the sports lineup. People like the 40MM. I personally prefer 42MM as I am a big guy however rolex fixed that problem for me once they introduced the Maxi Dial and Maxi case. A 40MM Sub, GMT II, and SD4K fit phenomenal now. Thanks to the larger case designs. I'm so glad i never bought a vintage version when i had the chance. I love the newer ceramic bezels and Maxi Cases/Dials

The average Joe looking for a daily wearable Rolex is going to go with a 40mm Sub. The DSSD is their big bad monster that attracts its own crowd. The SD4K gets lost in the mix... and for this I'm actually happy - as its my absolute hands down favorite Rolex and its rare (and even more so now). |

A SD with red lettering would be really nice but it would be redundant with my D blue so I would not buy one.
