Speedy for graduate
My son is graduating this May and we would like to reward him for his hard work with a speedy. Not sure which would be a good first quality watch for a 21 year old computer engineer. I see some can get up there in price. What are the differences? Any recommendations?

The speedy is a fantastic watch and one that should last him a lifetime!

I think it would make a great gift. I'm a graduated CS/math guy myself and appreciate the finer sides of technology (vintage/mechanical watches etc). I think you should keep it simple and go for a Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch package (311.30.42.30.01.005) or the First Omega in Space(311.32.40.30.01.001). 2 watches that wear very similarly with distinct differences (alpha hands on the FOIS, smaller measured case profile with the FOIS because the lack of crown guards, sapphire crystal on the FOIS versus hesalite on the traditional moonwatch etc). You know your son best so I leave it to you to research and pick one for him but I think these are the best intros into the Speedmaster world. They are safe pieces to buy if you buy right in terms of depreciation (around $3500-$3800 each with a full warranty these days if you buy them from good grey sellers with a full warranty) and will serve as a great watch for life or an excellent intro into the world of watches. You're a great Dad for thinking of your son, congratulations on him graduating.

I'd go with the basic Speedmaster with solid case back and hesalite crystal. The added bonus is also that it's one of the least expensive Speedmaster models

I would like to offer a slightly different suggestion: the speedmaster professional with a sapphire (instead of hesalite) crystal and a sapphire (instead of solid) caseback. It's about 450 bucks more expensive (something like 3900 vs 4300), but the 363 caliber is a thing of beauty to admire through the clear caseback. If your son is hard on his watches, the sapphire's scratch resistance will come in handy as well. Great gift either way, good luck!

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. These are right in the range we are looking to be around. Will seek out the models suggested.

I would like to second the FOIS recommendation.
DAVIDSW just sourced a BNIB for me two weeks ago and I am loving it. Great watch at a great price. |
