Still Stuck
Hey guys!
I've probably made about a million posts already, but I still haven't made up my mind. I need help picking my first watch. I know it's about what you like, but I also want advice on whether something will hold value and not be a fad. I have been going back and forth on a Submariner v. FF Automatique. I narrowed it down back to Sub (LV, LN), but now I have fallen in love with the Tank watch series from Cartier. I love the Tank Solo REF#W5200026, but I cannot justify spending 8K+ on a Cartier. I have no problem dropping 10K+ on a Rolex because I know the value will hold. The other part of me is wondering if I am falling for either a fad or I am steering too far into a formal watch. What are your opinions on Cartier v. Rolex? Specifically W5200026 v. 116610LN/LV. |

Two completely different watches. Look at your lifestyle and dress and go with what suits you more.
I will say, though, it's hard to beat a sub for your first. |

Exactly what I am thinking, but that Cartier is so gorgeous. I wish Rolex made Tank like watches, today. It is extremely hard to go against the Sub. I cannot justify spending the same amount for a Cartier. I feel as if I am an old soul, which is why I fell in love with the Cartier. It looks presidential and the elegance it offers is one of a kind. I dress pretty preppy, so I guess both would work. |

Have you tried both on? Rolex and Cartier are located next to each other. I personally prefer SubC.

Wait to see what comes out at Baselworld.
Then buy the Rolex. You should not wear that Cartier everyday. |

I'm not a huge fan of that Cartier. Out of those two the Sub for sure. I like the Santos 100 or the Calibre De Cartier with the in house movement if I'm going with Cartier.
But for your first luxury watch you can't go wrong with a Rolex. It always feels special to put a Rolex on your wrist. |

Both those watches are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Get both

A Cartier Tank is the dress watch that I'm planning on buying in the future. They're a great watch.
But go Rolex first. |

Rolex first, the Cartier brand gets hammered in the grey market.

Yea. I think you're right. I might get both, but I don't want to over spend on my first watch purchase. I never owned a watch.

I vote for Sub first whether it is a 116610LN or 114060. Of course there is the colorful option of a 116610LV.

I can see the allure of the Cartier. I'd go Sub first, it's so versatile. I too love "old soul" type watches, have you considered a Reverso? I'd still go Sub! Good luck.

Like the majority - Sub first (LV) for daily wear and the Cartier for dress to follow.

Both look great, but hey this is TRF, so you probably gonna hear Sub a lot. I would say Watchwatcher says it best, Sub C is the best choice for a first watch!

I would go with the Sub as a first and the cornerstone of any collection. You can buy a SS Sub-ND C 114060 slightly pre-owned from one of our Trusted Sellers here for right around 6K. If in the future, if you would like to move on to a Hulk or other watch then you will not get hurt in a trade/flip. The Cartier is a different story though. A little internet research will show a lot of opinions but I am of the school of thought that Cartier, while some very interesting designs, does not really move into serious watches. I know the history of the company, but if you buy it you own it. Look at the retail prices, then look at the resale value of any model. And that is asking price not buying price. Do yourself a favor and expand your search into JLC, Longines or several others and save yourself some money.
