Daytona Questions about current Value/Demand??

OK guys, not very knowledgable about the Daytona lineup, as never really had a interest to get one. But have a good friend, who is not a member of this forum, who is about to buy one and have some questions on his behalf.

How are the SS Daytona's selling these days? Still at premium prices? Which model, the white or black dialed, tends to be more popular?

Also, if my friend is able to get a Daytona at MSRP from a AD in the USA, which is a good deal, if down the road short term he needed to sell it, would he take a hit, break even or be able to make a profit on it (and if so how much are second hand BNIB or LNIB Daytona currently going for on the market in the USA.)

I don't think I've ever seen anyone lose money on a SS daytona.

currently on this forum, they seem to be going from around $10,500 to $11,200.

Those prices are about right.
With the down turn of economy, I'm sure there are some folks who are trading in their Daytona's and preowned prices will be favorable.
There was one here recently sold for $9,200, BNIB but older F serial black dial. Still good deal for both seller and buyer.

Well, since my friend is getting his Daytona at MSRP from a AD that is a good deal, but he is curious of what the resell value would be if he needed to flip in a short time period. Looks like he would be able to at least break even. Of course if market in general continues going the way it is, might be harder to sell than in the past.

I believe this is the reason why the SS Daytona is sold above MSRP ... when people who don't really want one buy it cheaper and sell it (for a profit) to another who really wants, except cannot find the watch at MSRP

Personally, I would not buy an expensive watch like Rolex unless I really like and will keep it ... just by 2 cents.

Sounds like your friend is ramping up to flip a watch and take away someone's opportunity to own one at MSRP - awesome.

I don' tthink those are his intentions, but with the market going the way things are it is good to do the research to be prepared just in case. I think many like to get a watch and keep it, but if things go south, it is good to know you can sell and break even or even make a profit instead of loosing money.

With the average AD seling the watch for around 10.000 plus, the flipping profit, currently, is not there. Many watches remain unsold.
Prices and profits for desireable watches like, GV, DSSD, SS Daytonas etc. they are not "flipping" money makers anymore.
Personally I will not pay above MSRP for the above three Rolex models, if you ask me what will I pay for all other Rolex models..? Let's say I am starting from 25% off retail and will go up to 42% off retail.

Well to directly answer your questions:

1. The SS models still sell well and he'd be lucky to get an MSRP sale

2. In the US, I don't think there is a preference for white or black that actually results in a sale price differential. Asia appears to be different.

3. I think all of us that even casually observe the GM or personal sales trends have witnessed a softening of prices. Thus far, all seem to assume he's going to flip it BNIB. Your comment "down the road" seems to indicate that he'll wear it and maybe sometime in the future sell it as a worn watch. It won't sell for as much, but you can crusie through the for sale sections here and on TimeZone and see for yourself.
