So wonderful for Stroke victims ...

https://www.thesun.co.uk/living/3304...h-3-foot-wire/

... "a radical new treatment that bring patients “back to life” ... called a mechanical thrombectomy,

... "removing blood clots from deep within the brain using a 3ft-long wire.

... "If done within six hours of a stroke, it significantly boosts survival and slashes a patient’s chances of disability."

It is a huge advancement.

I'm actually surprised to learn that was still investigational in the UK until now. Products like this typically receive CE mark before the FDA approval. We've had a few MT devices on the market here for a few years

Lost my dad, he was 49, to a stroke 16 years ago.

This is an incredible breakthrough and hopefully it can save many lives.

I work with an excellent interventional neuroradiologist who does intracranial mechanical thrombectomy in addition to other emergent procedures for stroke patients. His skill set is nothing short of amazing. The outcomes can be fantastic, though of course with any procedure there is risk involved.

PSA: Heart attacks can be more dramatic in presentation than stroke, as strokes are not associated with pain. But they are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. At one center where I trained, we called strokes "brain attacks" to convey the urgency of the situation. People tend to blow off symptoms initially if they are minor, but symptoms can progress rapidly. Unfortunately time is not on your side in the setting of acute ischemic stroke (blocked vessel supplying brain tissue).

If you think someone is having a stroke, remember FAST:

Face- Have them smile, unevenness or drooping is abnormal.
Arms- Have them lift their arms, see if one is weak.
Speak- Slurring of speech is abnormal.
Time- Call for emergency services right away, and note the time you last saw the person normal. Time since symptom onset determines treatment options.

These are the most common symptoms of the type of strokes that can be treated with mechanical thrombectomy. Ideally there is a certified stroke center in your community and EMS will know to take the patient there. By the time they arrive, clinical assessment, imaging, and intervention are set up to take place as fast as possible.
