What a good first rolex?
Hey everyone,
This is my first post here and would just like to say hi My real name is Andrew so you can call me that if you want. For the last month or so I have been wearing a swiss replica Yellow gold daytona, Which is a nice watch, However wearing it has made me want a real rolex that much more and I'm going to start looking around. I'd like to ask some of the more knowledgeable buyers what watch would be recommended for a first time buyer? I have always had a thing for gold but I'm quite confident any gold parts on the watch would greatly increase the price. Im open to suggestions, I look forward to hearing them :) ~Andrew |

Welcome to the Forum Andrew..
It always depends on how much you have to spend.... If you like gold and are not prepared to spend 20 thousand or more, then the used market is where you need to search.. You can find a nice Two Tone Daytona for much less than you can buy a new SS Daytona.. And for a 3 thousand or so, you can find a dozen year old TT Date Just. Plenty of ideas..... tell us what you like and we can provide lots of avenues...

It depends on your budget obviously... Rolex varies wildly obviously, from a few thousand to well over a hundred thousand.

Welcome to the board. First you need to go to the Rolex website and see what interests you. After that start looking at prices. SS are cheapest, then two tone followed by gold and platinum. Do a search for "price list" in the forum here and you will see the current prices of all models

I would say 5-6 thousand would be the limit for me at this time, And a TT Date Just does sound pretty nice. The thing that would worry me is the authenticity of the watch, since I have heard the horror stories of fakes that were sold as real ones.
The other watch I'm growing pretty found of is the TT Submariner Date, I love how the blue and the gold contrast, it looks stunning. |

Since you said you like gold I would go the route of a TT (gold and stainless). You need to decide what type of bracelet you like. Just go to sites like Demsey, Capetown, A and E, and look at what you like. I will be honest, no matter how much research you do, your first choice will be the best and worst you will make. Best to take a step back, look, jump in, buy, and understand your tastes will change some. My advice again is to look, study, and then; jump into the deep end of the pool and enjoy.

Several factors include budget, styling and availability.
Need to determine each variable to focus your attention. |

There're no right or wrong answer Andrew, just go with what takes your fancy and your budget. My first Rolex was a GMT-Master 2 back in 1987 as it was the newst model then, but I could just as easily have gone for the Submariner-date or Explorer 2. Good luck and enjoy!

IMO, the SS Sub Date has got to be one of the most classic/versatile watches out there. Every true watch aficianado should own one

Andrew,
Your 5-6 thousand dollar budget is right where a decent 5-10 year old used TT Submariner would be. The Blue TT Sub is very popular and a stand-out. Make sure that you are dealing with a reputable dealer.... ask around at your Authorized Dealers and see if they can recommend an honest shop.. You are definitely on the right track................

Buy a Sea Dweller!
Great watch, much like the sub only better due to no cyclops (ducking the stones being thrown at me right now) Also, this was the last year it was produced so the last year of a legend. NEVER buy a watch as an investment but there are lots of reasons to think you would never lose money on a Sea Dweller.

Good luck in your hunting for a two tone Rolex, your budget should give you plenty of choice. Larry (Tools) has said it all in advice, make sure you try on as many watches as you can to get best idea of choice and get what suits you and your lifestyle the best

There is a lot of preowned choices out there in that price range, I would first go to an AD, try some on to help narrow down what you like and them start the hunt. Good luck & have fun!

Take off the fake immediately and go buy a Casio.
Then begin your search....otherwise, we will not help you, OK? |

Take a look at a TT Blue Submariner- gold plus that irresistable cobalt blue. There is a pre-owned one in this forum's classifieds in your price range. For a brand new Rolex, the Explorer 2 in either black or white dial are solid choices if you decide on an all stainless piece to stay within your budget. (I'm just partial to the sport watches. Nothing against the Date Justs as I have yet to own one.)
If you are near an Authorized Dealer (AD), then by all means visit them and feast your eyes on the real deal in your hands. Photos are helpful but holding the actual item in your hands imparts a lot more - like the heft and weight of the piece, the glitter and shimmer from the display area lighting, and the smoother sweep of the second hand as as opposed to the stutter of watch movements moving at about half the 28,800tph of a Rolex movement. Welcome to the party. |

Go to the nearest Rolex AD and try few on your wrist. Note down the prices and then go research on internet. You will know what you want in your price range. Again, if you decide to buy on ebay or a non-AD source, make sure the seller has a good reputation. If the seller is good and has a long history of selling authentic watches you can trust him. For your first watch, go with the one that comes with original papers. This is because if you change your mind and want to sell it you will get a fair price. Lastly, go with what you like. You are going to get different opinion from everyone here. I got and ExpII as first and SS Sub with date as second. Love them. Good luck!
