Purchasing a Rolex from an individual

I need some advice on this potential purchase. I came across a 2004 Rolex ladies Datejust Jubilee watch from a friends mom. She want's $1,800.00 for the watch. I looked at it and it is a legit Rolex. Also took it to my local AD. He said it is good.

My question is this. I would like to re sell this watch and use the proceeds to purchase my wife a Rolex (she didn't like the yellow gold on this one). Is there any possible way to ensure the watch is not on a lost/stolen list before I purchase? I absolutely want no part of the deal if that is the case. They do not seem like those type of people, but you never know. Just want to be 100% sure before I spend the money.

Thanks in advance. This forum is awesome.

Curious how you're sure it's legit? Was the caseback opened? Movement inspected?

I had my AD inspect it. He took it back while I browsed around a while.

If it were me - and I am very cautious with my money - I would pass on this opportunity and contact (via PM) one of the Trusted Sellers on this forum (DavidSW, OCRolexguy, Takuya, etc.) and see if they can source exactly what you want.

Check the site chrono24 to see what prices are for the watch you are interested in, but buy from someone with a strong reputation, like our trusted sellers.

FYI, the secondary market for ladies Rolex isn't very dynamic. As a random seller, you will encounter the same concerns you have with your seller.

Don't think you are going to reap huge gains on a sale. You may actually lose money and put yourself at risk.

I'd suggest leaving watch flipping to the dealers, especially with a ladies watch. It's too unpredictable.

+1 You are not 100% sure of the deal at hand. Say you buy it then you have to sell it, then find a watch that your wife likes. Why not do as stated above and be done with it?

To check if it is stolen, you can give it to RSC and ask for a service quote, and they will then tell you if is stolen and if so they will confiscate it. If you go for this then you should warn your seller that this is what you will do and work out the possible recompense.

Don't do it. So many things can go wrong in such a transaction and the best thing you can buy with your money is peace of mind.

I'm trying to envision a friend's mother selling a Rolex that I wondered if it was hot...

Perhaps you need better friends?

Are you questioning the honesty and integrity of your friends mom? Maybe she needs money? If she is not a watch person, she might not know the true value or have the ability to sell it herself.

If it's authentic, which you have verified, go for it and don't over think the transaction.

For such minimal gain, why bother going through all the trouble.

Go ahead and buy it.

Sell it for 2k and pocket a hefty $200 profit.

This is the only way to verify if it is stolen or not

I'm with the others, you seem IMHO, to be buying a potential problem for potentially what may be if you're lucky, a small gain. Trusted sellers here, are going be a safer route to getting your wife her Rolex. If in doubt just walk away, it's your hard earned cash after all said and done.

Ask if he is the original owner if so than ask him to give you a copy of his drivers license just in case it is not legit. If he has no problem giving you a copy of his drivers license than he is official. I would also make a receipt between you and him.

I subscribed to a luxury watch reviewer on youtube and he says selling/flipping women's Rolex watches is a real nasty pain. It's not easy. Unless you have a straight up buyer waiting for it, I'd forget about making any money on this watch.

I would pass. As everyone else said in this thread ladies watches are a tough sell and you may actually end up losing money. Best case scenario you're looking at $100-$200 profit, but most likely you'll lose a few hundred.
