Hard time getting myself to wear / buy a beater!

Ever since getting into fine timepieces (rolex, panerai, etc) -- I find it overwhelmingly difficult to purchase or wear a 'beater' for whatever occasion or to bring on trips.

I typically like to travel 'light' and that includes not bringing any 'valuables' of significant value (even if insured), but love wearing a watch. In fact the last 2 week europe vacation I took I brought NO watch - and that seemed to sit with me better then wearing something I don't enjoy ---

Anyone face the same dilemma? Did you find a 'beater' watch that you wear to questionable locations?

I might get over it one way or another ...

Do you have a 'travel' watch thats not of 'value'?

I have an Apple Watch that I still use sometimes. Its good to keep an eye on my heart rate during exercise.

My 116610lvc is my really nice watch and my beater. I wear it no matter what I'm doing. I don't ever give it a second thought. If I'm not sleeping, I'm wearing it.

I agree. I tried putting my money in Seikos, Oris, Citizens, and Hamiltons, but couldn't find myself to keep them long after getting in the Rolex game. So instead, I use a Speedmaster Professional as a beater. Nobody knows what it is unless they know watches and the small Omega logo is covered by the chronograph hand. Very discreet for a luxury watch.

I dont travel much so not sure I'll use it, but I'll always keep a Seiko SKX009 around. Absolutely fantastic watch with a great history and pedigree of its own all for about $200. I replaced the bezel on mine with a Murphy coin edge which really upgrades the cheapest feeling part of the watch for me and adds a nice custom touch. For less than $250 on a NATO strap it's a go-to backup I like to have around.

If I couldn't afford a Rolex or ever needed to sell mine in an emergency I could live happily with my SKX.

Come on, Europe is not a 'questionable' location with maybe the odd exception just like anywhere else including the US.
I've lived and worked in the US for years in a past life and you're no worse off here in Europe than you are there in the US....and there are plenty of odd exceptions there too.
And no, I'm not paranoid about what I wear watch wise and I travel to some routinely questionable locations all over the globe regularly. Europe is the last place on my list I worry about my watch.
I did however stick to wearing a Seiko beater to a location in SA recently, and glad I did. One of my crew was mugged stood within 10ft of the hotel reception, inside the hotel grounds and they took everything.
It's more about being aware of your surroundings, where ever you are, and less about what's on your wrist.

Depends on what you call a "beater".

Some beaters are another's dream watch.

For example, a high tech Casio with GPS is fascinating to me and I can wear it day in day out, but many would call it a beater compared to a Rolex.

I'm most certainly not in the same tax bracket at 99% of the people on here. I recently bought my daily wear, a breitling superocean. It was reasonably priced (used of course), relatively cheap to maintain, and can easily take whatever I dish out during my daily work routine. Dare I even say, the quality is just beyond that of a Rolex :o
At first, I would get bummed if I nicked the bracelet, but, as so many have said all over this board, the use adds character. Really, if it came down to it, and I needed a perfect one, I could always buy another, or polish this one out.... there's no shortage of superoceans out there.

I don't. I wear my SD as my beater. I don't beat it...but I'm not overly protective of it.

Taken in the wrong context this could sound arrogant, but I agree 100%. I have a polar Explorer II, I feel I would be doing the watch a dis-service if I didn't classify it as an everyday 'beater' watch.

Not that I'm a world traveler but a Rolex would sure help you out of a jam in some countries.

I just put the watch on and wear it without really worrying about it. I have insurance and have been doing so for six plus years.

My daily wear is a Tudor Submariner. I use a Casio Illuminator for exercise as I like the chronograph and comfort. I use an El-Cheapo SS watch for Church on Sunday.

Same here its my daily driver. Very under the radar for most people.

I went to Eastern Europe last fall with 2 Rolex ...
My GMT BLNR and Sub C Bluesy ... Both insured and
had no problems...

Take what you want to wear if it's insured and rest assured
with peace of mind ...

To answer your question , yes I do find it hard to wear a
beater after wearing my fine timepieces... Then again one is
being worn daily so...

I'm going to Maui next week and my Submariner is going with me. I might relegate my TAG Carrera Calibre 5 to wrist duty for travels abroad. Not sure on that one yet.

Today at work one of my colleagues said......"what's that saucer on your wrist"........it's gotta be like 55mm or more.

Ive bought seikos,Oris's and even Tag's with the thought of using them as beaters and i still end up using one of my Rolex's as a daily... i am by no means rough on my watches so that has defeated the purpose of trying to use a cheaper watch as a beater.
The only one ive decided to keep as a beater is my Limited Edition Seiko turtle emerald... the rest ive moved on
