Went in water. Why did my Daytona stop?
Hi guys,
I am a new owner of a pre-owned 2001 daytona. I had owned the watch for three weeks with no issues, but the first time I took it into the the water it stopped before my eyes. Was a shallow lake in northern Ontario, Canada. I made 100% sure that all of the dials were very tight as I was conscious I was going into the water with my watch. Within about 15 minutes I looked and the watch had stopped. Got out, dried it off with a towel and it had re-started. Was driving it into town to courier it to the shop I bought it from when it stopped again. second-hand dealer received the watch two days later said there was no condensation and also said it appeared to be running fine. He sent it into the western Canada Rolex "after sales service" shop in Vancouver and they performed a servicing on it. They confirmed that there was no evidence of water damage inside the watch and they cleaned and calibrated it for me. Gave me a 1 year warranty. I have paperwork to support all this. So... Obviously I am happy to have the watch back but why did it stop in the first place?? Any ideas or comments? Anything I need to be watching for?? Thanks guys! |

If no water was found maybe just not fully wound before putting it on your wrist. Give it a full 40 turns (crown...manual wind) before wearing it; that should 'fully charge' it. Good to hear no water was inside.

I don't see any relationship between going in the water and your watch stopping..
Seems like total coincidence to me.........

it was afraid you had driven your race car off course into the water.

If you were sure that all 3 crowns were screw-locked before you entered the water, then I don't think it's a water-related problem. Perhaps the advice given by the other members might help. Good luck - JJ

I think also that it was not fully wound.
Let us know if you have any more issues with it. Also, I would set it to the atomic clock and just see if it loses or gains any significant time.

If rolex serviced your watch and gave you a 1 year warranty with the work then there was a problem with the watch, you bought it used and its about due for a service since its 7 years old. HM "S.L.U.T.S. RULE"

The watch stopped while you were wearing it which tells me that winding was probably not an issue. If you are wearing the watch it should never stop as long as there is some arm movement (except if you wear and sleep overnight). Probably water did the damage. Good that you had it serviced, I would probably do the same.

Thanks guys,
I had been wearing the watch daily for three weeks prior to going in the water. no issues. Wasn't exactly doing jumping jacks or anything but just wearing it around like anyone else would. Service receipt from rolex has no changed parts or labor other than the standard servicing and cleaning. Not sure if that helps anyone at all. |

Welcome. The watch simply needed a service and should be fine now, enjoy it.

Rolex never states all the parts they replace in the movement during service, they just do it. except optionals or case parts like dial, hands, crown. being 7 years old its obvious the oils were dry creating more friction, making it harder to run properly.

They charged $500 + shipping. The guy I bought it from split the bill with me.
I think it just needed servicing too but it seems like quite the coincidence that the watch chose to give out at the exact moment I went in the water. |

I'd go with a multi-vicosity oil. It's cold up there.
It will be fine, enjoy your watch.
